This week sees the opening of a new retrospective exhibition of the work of comics artist and illustrator Kate Charlesworth in Glasgow.
Curated by John McShane, BLAMM!, at the iota arts space, is the first major retrospective of Kate’s work, spans her entire career from comic strips such as “Dykes Delight“, through to work for New Scientist and the Guardian to books such as The Cartoon History of Time and the powerful graphic novel Sally Heathcote Suffragette, created in collaboration with Mary Talbot, winner of the Costa prize, and Bryan Talbot creator of Granville.
She’s just one of contributors to the recently-released Amnesty International project Here I Stand, a collection of short stories and poetry in which 25 leading authors and illustrators (who also include Neil Gaiman, Chris Riddell and Bryan Talbot) explore the top human rights issues facing young people today.
iota is a non profit arts organisation, producing shows and collaborative projects involving visual arts, music, poetry, prose, performance, architecture and design, encouraging engagement with creativity, at home and abroad.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
