There’s been a bit of a gap between issues, but Diamond PREVIEWS is listing is the upcoming release of Sanjulian’s Queens of the Lost World #3, written by John Reppion and Leah Moore, with art by Silvia Califano, from now London-based Opus Comics, in April.
However, it does seem that issues surrounding Opus Comics behind the scenes restructuring last year may mean planned releases from the company remain in doubt.
Legendary Spanish artist Sanjulián is known throughout the world for his beautiful and haunting covers for Creepy, Eerie, Famous Monsters, Vampirella, and many more. Now his most vivid paintings are coming to life in Sanjulian’s Queens of the Lost World, a collaboration with the master himself.
Written by Leah Moore & John Reppion (Doctor Who) with art by Silvia Califano (Star Trek: Year Five), this ongoing series, with some adult themes and art, features characters inspired by iconic paintings like Dragon Queen, Warrior, and Glass of Death in a thrilling fantasy adventure.
London-based Opus Comics, which moved operations to the UK in a major rescue and restructure, reported here after artists raised concerns about the company by Bleeding Cool, has previously published an impressive lineup of titles, led by Frank Frazetta’s Death Dealer. They launched Sanjulian’s Queens of the Lost World last year, but all their titles were delayed following the major company move.
“I’m a big fan of Sanjulian and his gorgeous painted style, so the idea of bringing his work to a fresh audience like we did with Frank Frazetta seemed like a no-brainer,” Opus Comics and Incendium founder, Llexi Leon said of the title before it launched last year. “He may not be known in the same way Frazetta was, but his covers for Creepy, Eerie, Vampirella, and other publications are no less iconic. We’re confident readers will embrace the new world Leah Moore, John Reppion, and Silvia Califano are creating based on his work.”
Leah Moore is a writer with a Bachelor of Arts in Classics and English Literature, having graduated from Manchester University in 2001. Her career began in 2002 with scripts written for America’s Best Comics (ABC). John Reppion is a writer who has co-written comics in partnership with his Leah as Moore & Reppion, since 2003.
Italian artist Silvia Calfiano’s credits span titles such as 2000AD and Star Trek, but she made her debut in 2007 as part of Italy’s Xanadu Studio, working on storyboards, illustrations, and animated spots.
Her many credits also include Dampyr, for Sergio Bonelli Editore, and Judge Dredd, Star Trek and The X-Files, for IDW.
Opus Comics was formed in 2022 by former Heavy Metal Magazine and IDW Publishing employees, CEO Llexi Leon, Executive Editor Denton J. Tipton, who now heads up Magma Comics, and International Editor RG Llarena. It has now moved operations to the UK after restructuring.
