One of our most popular stories earlier last year on downthetubes centred on the hope that NetflixUK would follow up screening Titans with a screening of Doom Patrol. The service never responded to queries about it, but almost one year later the show focusing on DC Comics oddest superteam has arrived in the UK, through subscription service Starzplay, via Amazon’s Prime Video platform, Apple TV and Virgin TV.
StarzPlay is the on-demand service from Starz, the US TV producer behind titles such as American Gods, Outlander and Torchwood: Miracle Day. The service, which costs £4.99 a month, is available through an app, and via Amazon Prime Video and Virgin TV.
And for those who don’t know, until tomorrow (6th January 2020) you can get a month’s subscription on Starzplay for 99p. So if you’re not interested in paying another monthly subscription fee, you can take this one month offer, then you could cancel before the first month finishes and you switch to an ongoing full price monthly payments.
(There’s currently a free trial offer on Apple TV, too).
A month is sufficient time to get through all 15 episodes of Doom Patrol, plus the ten episode Pennyworth series about Batman/Bruce Wayne’s butler which is also on Starzplay.
That said, the service has a few other series that might be of interest to genre fans – the adaptation of Rick Remender’s Deadly Class, the Stephen King universe series Castle Rock, science fiction spy thriller Counterpart starring J.K. Simmons, and more, so maybe a subscription is worth considering if you can afford another.
Also available on Blu-Ray and DVD, Doom Patrol, created by Jeremy Carver for DC Universe, reimagines one of DCs most beloved groups of Super Heroes: Robotman aka Cliff Steele, Negative Man aka Larry Trainor, Elasti-Woman aka Rita Farr and Crazy Jane, led by modern-day mad scientist Niles Caulder aka The Chief.
Each member of the Doom Patrol suffered a horrible accident that gave them superhuman abilities, but also left them scarred and disfigured. Traumatised and downtrodden, the team found their purpose through The Chief, coming together to investigate the weirdest phenomena in existence.
Following the mysterious disappearance of The Chief, these reluctant heroes will find themselves in a place they never expected to be called to action by Vic Stone aka Cyborg, who comes to them with a mission that’s hard to refuse. Part support group, part Super Hero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of superpowered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them.
