Hibernia Comics has issued an update on its plans for its next Doomlord collection, beginning a series focused on the original EAGLE photo stories – and teased plans for its Red Dagger series, delivering collections of strips from DC Thomson titles.
The Doomlord collection, The Doomlord Photostories Volume One will be available probably within the next month.
“I know we had this flagged for release in June,” says publisher David McDonald, “but holidays etc, caused this to slip. Don’t worry – it will be worth the wait, I have just seen the design on the ‘Making of Doomlord’ article by Richard Pearce that will be included, and it looks amazing!”

For those wondering about a reprint of Hibernia’s fantastic Red Dagger King Cobra collection, featuring the early adventures of DC Thomson’s British superhero, drawn by Ron Smith, nothing set in stone yet, but they are hopeful of doing that later in the year. The first edition, published recently, sold out far faster than expected, confirming the character’s popularity.
Meanwhile, Hibernia have been soliciting suggestions for further collections from fans – and have had no shortage of suggestions, among them, for example, early strips featuring art by Dave Gibbons.
For those who haven’t bought titles such as The Editors Cut, The Running Man or Slave of the Screamer, these are now very low in stock after Enniskillen Comic Fest, less than 20 of each now left, grab a copy here while you can still get copies from Hibernia’s official website at hiberniacomics.com. Plus, copies of Hibernia’s first Doomlord collection, The Death Lords of Nox, published some years ago now!

Interesting. Never read Hotspur and Wizard. Were they on the way out by late 1970s/early 80s as they didn’t seem as prominent on shelves as usual suspects 2000AD, Battle, Warlord & UK Marvel?
That Wriggling Wrecker page contains an early prototype of what looks like Dave’s depiction of Dan Dare.
The Hotspur originally launched as a story paper in 1993, first issue cover dated 2nd September 1933, running until October 1959 (1197 issues in total). It was immediately relaunched as a comic the same month and continued until January 1981, running for 1110 issues. The Victor ran for 1657 issues from the first issue cover dated 25th January 1961 until it ceased publication with the issue cover dated 21st November 1992. They had a strong presence on news stands and sold just as well as their IPC/ Fleetway rivals at their peak, but were more “old fashioned” in format. There’s no doubt, however, that DC Thomson’s Warlord, launched in September 1974, running until September 1986, significantly influenced the style of Battle Picture Weekly.
