Egmont will launch a new Teletubbies magazine next month, building on the popularity of the rebooted pre-school programme, which airs on BBC’s CBeebies channel at 7.00am daily.

Teletubbies first hit screens in 1997, and the show follows the four colourful main characters – Tinky-Winky, Dipsy, Laa Laa and Po – in a playful environment which is designed to help young children develop their physical, emotional, and cognitive skills.

The BBC published its own tie-in title from 1997 until 2009 to accompany the original  series and at the height of Teletubby mania in 1997, the magazine had a top circulation of over 270,000 copies. One of many BBC titles acquired by Immediate Media in 2004, its circulation had dwindled to 24,000 over the first six months of 2009 before it ceased publication.

Egmont Publishing signed a licensing deal back in 2014, granting it international rights, excluding China and North America, to produce a range of children’s books and magazines based on the upcoming series of Teletubbies.

The new magazine is aimed at boys and girls aged from six months to three years, and comes packed with activities as well as a free gift in every issue.

“I’m very excited about the launch of Teletubbies magazine,” says Laura Adnitt, Publishing Director of Teletubbies magazine, “which we have developed specially to help very young readers begin to develop their skills and engage with the warmth and fun of the Teletubbies world through print.

“We have worked with child development professional Dr Amanda Gummer and the team of experts at Fundamentally Children to create a unique programme of covermounted gifts which support the developmental aims of the magazine.”

The new 60-episode series of Teletubbies was commissioned by CBeebies, the children’s arm of the BBC, and is being produced by award-winning UK production company, Darrall Macqueen Ltd. It features the same well-loved characters but brings a refreshed, contemporary look to one of the world’s most well-known pre-school properties, “ensuring that it is relevant for a new generation”.

• The launch issue of Teletubbies – which will be released on 5th October – is priced at £2.99, and comes with stickers and a Laa Laa bedtime playset
