John Patrick Reynolds has just released another of his fab limited edition Beano screenprints, this time featuring Dennis the Menace’s faithful dog Gnasher and his son, Gnipper.
Both dogs are looking very bored, lying about like a couple of disaffected teenagers, waiting for something to happen… or, perhaps, they’re about to make something happen, which is more likely knowing this pair!
Signed and numbered out of 200 in pencil John under licence from publisher DC Thomson, these handmade, limited edition Denis the Menace-inspired screen prints are created on mould-made, cotton paper and join a range of wonderful images for sale from the comic, alongside other ranges featuring Asterix, images from Commando comic, the Bash Street Kids, Minnie the Minx and more.
“This panel first appeared in The Beano in the 1970s,” says John. “I love it – anthropomorphism at its best.
“I first produced this image as a medium screenprint a few years ago but never got around to making it available in my standard size. But here it is, finally.”
Dennis the Menace made his debut in the 1950s, but his Abyssinian wire-haired tripe house, Gnasher, only appeared in the late 1960s and Gnipper a few years after that.
“They both seem to be made of the same kind of thing as Dennis the Menace’s hair,” John notes, “the untamed explosion of black symbolic of the chaos they embody.
“They all represent a gift to the screenprinter, from a graphic point of view, with Dennis’s red-and-white striped jersey and the dogs’ explosion of black hair.”
