Granite City Comic-Con returns to Aberdeen soon – a four day pop culture event featuring special guests, art and writing workshops, children’s activities, cosplay, retailers and independent publishers.
The first Granite City Comic-Con was held last year and as well as offering a great day out, raised an awesome £2500 for CLAN Cancer Support. The organisers are determined the event will become an annual staple in Scotland’s (and, indeed, Britain’s) culture calendar.
Set to be a great event for die-hard fans and casual geeks alike, comic creators on the line up this year are Nick Brokenshire, artist on IDW’s Amelia Cole, who has also drawn the event’s stunning Will Eisner/ early 2000AD-inspired poster; Northern Irish cover artist Ryan Brown, best known for his amazing photo-realistic covers, whose credits include includes IDW’s Rogue Trooper and Judge Dredd: Year One, and working with Glenn Fabry and Greg Staples, as well as Liam’s Sharp on Revolutionary War: and Death’s Head; Star Wars, Doctor Who and Marvel artist Gary Erskine, a key member of the team behind the brilliant Roller Grrrls project.
But that’s not all, because also on the guest list are Edinburgh-based manga artist Yishan Li, creator of Paradox Girl, whose work has been published internationally, garnering acclaim for her popular ‘How to Draw Manga’ series and has also worked for DC (Batwoman, Blue Beetle), Dark Horse (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Random House, Titan Comics and French publishers Delcourt and Dargaud; Marvel, Vertigo and 2000AD creator Montynero, whose Death Sentence project at Titan Comics has received deserved praise; comic artist and concept artist Nick Percival, whose credits include “Judge Dredd” and “Slaine” for 2000AD and The Punisher at Marvel; and Tanya Roberts, an artist that has worked for LucasArts and Disney on their Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Toy Story, How To Train Your Dragon and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle comics.
Also on the guest list are media guests actor Shane Rimmer (the original Scott Tracy from Thunderbirds, but whose CV reads like a who’s who of everything awesome; Paul Blake, Star Wars’ Greedo; and Garrick Hagon, best known for his role as Biggs Darklighter in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.
