One of the creators of Ben 10 and the writer of the magnificent I Kill Giants, Joe Kelly is the guest on the latest episode of the Lakes International Comic Art Festival Podcast.
Joe, who returns to the Lakes International Comic Art Festival in October, is a writer, producer, penciller and editor. I Kill Giants, illustrated by Ken Niimura (who will also be at the Festival), was winner of the 2012 International Manga Award from Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was named the one of the “Top Ten Great Graphic Novels for Teens” by the Young Adult Library Services Association upon its release. Kelly also wrote the screen adaptation for I Kill Giants, which is now a feature film.
As part of Man of Action Entertainment Kelly is one of the creators of the hit long-running animated series Ben 10 and one of the creators/executive producers and head writers on Cartoon Network’s Mega Man.
The Podcast team got him on to talk about his career, where it began and how he found spending three years on Deadpool and five years on Superman. The creation of Ben 10 also gets discussed, and how Joe found it was to adapt I Kill Giants from the graphic novel into its movie adaptation.
Also discussed is Joe’s work for the Traces of the Great War anthology with Ken Niimura, which will be out in October at the Festival.
Reviewed are A New Jerusalem by Benjamin Dickson, a harrowing new graphic novel about PTSD set after World War Two in Bristol, out in September; and the first issue of Gallant and Amos by Rob Barnes.
Pete Taylor has an interview with creator Russell Mark Olson on his favourite creators and what he’s working on. (This is Pete’s first interview like this and the sound’s a little off, but its well worth listening too so please ignore any sound issues. He hopes to do more of these in future episodes).
Mike Williams discusses comics and modern warfare and looks at the comics available that cover this and, co hosts Ian Loxam and Nikki Bates look at the exhibitions that will be on at this year’s Festival in Kendal, which include Playing for a Draw, the return of Hero(ines) to Cumbria and spotlights on the work of Hunt Emerson and Lorenzo Etherington.
Tickets are flying out the door – so grab your passes as soon as possible!
