Five of the six creators for the 2014 Lakes International Comic Art Festival’s 24 Hour Comic Challenge have now been revealed – with one more to find.

On Thursday 16th October, as part of the Festival, six comic artists will enter a room and draw comics non stop for 24 hours.

The 24 Hour Comics challenge was devised by Scott McCloud in 1990 and thousands of artists have risen to this challenge since.

The usual format for a 24 hour comic is to disallow planning and preparation beforehand. Some variations include constraints announced at the commencement of the 24 hours to make planing ahead futile.

The Festival intends to do things a little differently. Planning and preparation is not only allowed, but encouraged because they want to be able to tell the very best stories with the short time the creators have.

This year’s resident 24 hour comic artists are:

LICAF 2014 24 Hour Marathon - Dan Berry

Dan Berry is the curator and producer of the Festival’s 24 Hour Comics Marathon. He is a cartoonist, illustrator, lecturer in comics and host of the podcast Make It Then Tell Everybody. Check out his work here – www.thingsbydan.co.uk

LICAF 2014 24 Hour Marathon - Kristyna Baczynski

Kristyna Baczynski is an illustrator, comic book artist and designer based in Leeds who alongside publishing her own comic books has had work published by NME, Hic & Hoc and Blank Slate Books. Check out her work here – http://kristyna.co.uk

LICAF 2014 24 Hour Marathon - Sarah McIntyre

Sarah McIntyre is another of the resident 24 hour comic artists and will be launching Jampires (a David Fickling picture book with David O’Connell), Cakes In Space (the followup to Oliver and the Seawigs with Philip Reeve) and will also have some of the Jampires comics that inspired the picture book! LICAF 2014 24 Hour Marathon - Fumio Obata

• Hot from the release of his new book Just So Happens published by Jonathan Cape, comic artist, animator and educator Fumio Obata is also on the team. Check out more of Fumio’s work here – http://fumioworld.blogspot.co.uk

LICAF 2014 24 Hour Marathon - Jack Teagle

• Based in the South West of England, Jack Teagle has been published by Nobrow as well as self-publishing his own books. Check out his work here – www.jackteagle.co.uk

As we previously reported, the Festival is looking for a sixth comic artist.

“Not just any old comic artist, we are looking for an artist with a bunch of comics under their belt already, a proven track record that they can draw pictures into little boxes with the best of them,” said a spokesperson. “Not only that, but an artist that wants to rise to the challenge of the 24 hour Comics Marathon.”

If chosen, you will be working alongside the artists listed above, led by Dan Berry, to draw awesome comics.

Please email the Festival at julie@comicartfestival.com to apply and include a bit about yourself and examples of your work.

If selected you will join the 24 hour Comics Marathon team and you will be put up for three nights in Kendal, your travel will be paid for (for residents of the UK only), all food and you’ll be a guest of the festival for the weekend whilst you recover!

• The Deadline for application via email is 14th February 2014
