Marvel’s Agent Carter launches to critical acclaim

The debut of Marvel’s Agent Carter gave US network ABC – which also screens Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – its best A18-49 regular programming rating (1.9/6) in the 8.00p-10.00pm Tuesday time slot since November 2013, according to preliminary Nielsens. At 9.00pm, its permanent berth, the drama delivered a 1.8 rating.

In the new series, when troops return from fighting abroad, Peggy Carter (played by Hayley Atwell, reprising her role from the Captain America films) finds herself marginalized once again by 1940s society. In the wake of losing her love, Steve Rogers, she struggles to find balance between navigating life as a single woman and working at the covert Strategic Scientific Reserve.

Her new career blends  administrative duties with tackling secret missions for an old acquaintance, Howard Stark (played by (Dominic Cooper reprising his film role as the father of Tony Stark, aka Iron Man). Edwin Jarvis, Stark’s butler (Broadchurch’s James D’Arcy), helps Carter as she risks her life and freedom to complete assignments.

Reviewing the show in the Telegraph, Ben Travis says a strong script and a terrific female lead in Hayley Atwell make Agent Carter one to watch.

“Agent Carter’s two-hour premiere is the closest thing we have had to a female-led Marvel film, and the character is more than deserving of that accolade,” he enthuses. “It’s easy to see why Carter has become such a fan favourite – she’s no damsel in distress, standing alongside Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow as the franchise’s most headstrong female character. Assertive and intelligent, with a knack for dry British humour, she greets the misogynistic attitudes of the period with rolled eyes, witty put-downs and pursed-lipped stoicism.”

The series will run on 9.00pm on Tuesdays on ABC for the next seven weeks. There’s no word as yet on which UK broadcaster will pick up the series – Channel 4, who screen Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., told Den of Geek back in October that they had no current plans to pick up the show.

Marvel has announced Netflix will screen Marvel’s Daredevil (starring Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil) from 10th April 2015 at 12:01 a.m. PT in all territories where Netflix is available, so perhaps this streaming service will pick up Agent Carter?
