More European Comic Creators join October’s Lakes International Comic Art Festival line-up

Lakes International Comic Art Festival Guests Jibé, Pierre van Hove, Benoit Peeters, Arthur de Pins, Fabien Toulme, Alessandro Tota and Nicolas Wild.The Lakes International Comic Art Festival 2019 has announced a number of European comic creators who will be heading to Kendal in October for this year’s weekend-long Festival.

Joining the recently-announced Belgian and Belgium-based creators Serge Baeken, Ephameron, Loic Gaume, Ben Gijsemans, Valentine Laffitte, Pascal Lemaitre, Marine Schneider,Judith Vanistendael.and Joris Vermassen will be Jibé, Pierre van Hove, Benoît Peeters, Arthur de Pins, Fabien Toulmé, Alessandro Tota and Nicolas Wild.

Among these latest guests to be announced, Arthur de Pins may be the best known to many, an animator turned comics creator whose works included Zombillénium, which he brought to screen in 2017.

Fabien Toulmé broke into the world of graphic novels in 2014, with his first graphic novel Ce n’est pas toi que j’attendais in which he told the story of the birth of his daughter, who has Down’s syndrome, and Nicolas Wild is the author of the critically acclaimed Kabul Disco: How I Wasn’t Kidnapped in Afghanistan.

Benoît Peeters, who was appointed the UK’s first ever comics professor, at Lancaster University back in 2015, also makes a welcome return to the Festival.

“We’re delighted to welcome a range of European comic creators to this year’s Festival in October,” says Festival Director Julie Tait, “both old faces and new will add to what’s going to be a terrific mix of talent.”

Claudine Ripert-Landler, director of the Institut français du Royaume-Uni commented: “The Institut français has been supporting LICAF since the beginning, bringing French artists and programmers to the Festival every year, and we are delighted to have such a good French line-up for 2019.”

These newly-announced creators add to an international line-up that also includes Charlie Adlard, Comics Laureate Hannah Berry, Doug BraithwaiteLaurence Campbell, Kate Charlesworth, Becky Cloonan, Garth Ennis, Ephameron, Duncan Fegredo, Staz Johnson, Michael Lark, John McCrea, Junko Mizuno, Marine Schneider, Declan Shalvey, Simon Spurrier, Bryan Talbot, Mary Talbot, Judith Vanistendael, Joris Vermassen and Rob Williams – with more international and British guests to be announced.

In addition to its main guests, the Festival also recently announced its Comics Clock Tower creator line up, which will include a number of creators attending thanks to support from Festival patron Sean Phillips: artists Mack Chater, Paul Harrison Davies, Emma G, Emmainky, Michael Kennedy, Roger Langridge, Joe Latham, Angela Pan, writer John Harris Dunning and the team behind the graphic novel Square Eyes, Anna Mills and Luke Jones.

In other news, the Festival has confirmed that it will host the presentation of this year’s Sergio Aragonés International Award For Excellence In Comic Art to Walking Dead artist Charlie Adlard. His win was announced at the Reubens Awards, held recently at the inaugural NCSFest in Huntington Beach, California. The Lakes Festival is a partner of NCSFest, with Lyon BD.

Jean-Baptiste Pollien, a.k.a. Jibé, is a French cartoonist, illustrator and graphic designer from Lyon, who has worked as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer since 2010. He’s the author of comic series such as Sans Emploi (Marabout) and Basse Def (Omaké Books).

He’s also  participated in some collective works (Kokekokkô, On dit de Lyon, La psychanalyse des Super Héros) and helped Lyon BD Festival create the longest comic strip in the world, writing and storyboarding the work.

The resulting project earned an official Guinness World Record, at 1.6 km of comic strip.

He also created the independent label Quenelles Graphiques, to create and promote collective works (On dit de l’An 2000, Happy Hour) and exhibitions.

He has pre-published most of his work on his blog (www.chezjibe.com), since 2005.

Pierre Van Hove

Pierre Van Hove

Pierre Van Hove is an illustrator and graphic artist whose credits include Memoirs of a Book Thief, written by Alessandro Tota, published in English by SelfMadeHero. He is the co-founder of Enfin, a production company that works in the fields of audiovisual production, animation and short films.

In 2003, he wrote and directed the series of erotic cartoons Un peu d’amour, which was broadcast on Canal+.

Benoît Peeters, the UK’s first Professor in Graphic Fiction and Comic Art

Benoît Peeters was born in Paris in 1956. He published his first novel, Omnibus, in 1976, followed by La Bibliothèque de Villers in 1980. Since then, he has published over 60 works, on a wide variety of subjects.

An expert on Hergé, his books also include Tintin and the World of Hergé and Hergé‚ Son of Tintin (Johns Hopkins University Press), and he has also written essays on Alfred Hitchcock, Paul Valéry, Rodolphe Töpffer, Jirô Taniguchi and Chris Ware.

He recently published the first biography of Jacques Derrida, which has been translated into English (Polity Press) and six other languages.

Arthur de Pins

Arthur de Pins

Arthur de Pins started his career at the beginning of the century in animated short film making (including the famous The Crab Revolution), before turning to illustration and comic books.

These include the Péchés Mignons series, The march of the Crabs and Zombillénium. The latter was brought to screen by the author in 2017.

Fabien Toulmé was born in 1980 in Orleans. After studying Civil Engineering, he spent 10 years overseas, before returning to France in 2009 to devote himself to Comics, starting by publishing some stories on the web and then in magazines such as Psikopat.

In 2014, his first graphic novel Ce n’est pas toi que j’attendais was published by Editions Delcourt, which tells the story of the birth of his daughter, who has Down’s syndrome.

Since then, Fabien has contributed to several anthologies and published three further graphic novels: Les Deux Vies de Baudouin and Venenum in 2017 and l’Odyssée d’Hakim Tome 1 in 2018.

Alessandro Tota

Alessandro Tota

Alessandro Tota was born in Italy, but lives in Paris. He is one of the founders of the magazine Canicola, which won the BD Alternative Prize at the Angoulême Festival in 2007.

A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna, he is the author of numerous children’s books (including the Angoulême-nominated Caterina) and graphic novels. Since 2011, he has been a lecturer in comics at the Auguste Renoi Technical College in Paris.

Nicolas Wild

Born in 1977 in Alsace, Nicolas Wild is a former student of the renowned illustration workshops at the École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg. He lives in France and is the author of several graphic novels, including Le Voeu de Marc and Le Bourreau, and the critically acclaimed Kabul Disco: How I Wasn’t Kidnapped in Afghanistan.

Founded in 1910, the Institut français du Royaume-Uni comprises a language centre, a cinema (Ciné Lumière), a multi-media library (La Médiathèque), a children’s library (Bibliothèque Quentin Blake) and a café-restaurant, and welcomes 200,000 people each year.
