The latest issue of The Big Issue not only features a cover by V for Vendetta co-creator and Aces Weekly publisher David Lloyd – he’s interviewed, too!
Available from street vendors this week, Issue 1483, this week’s cover is an exclusive illustration by David Lloyd, the artist who alongside Alan Moore, set out to change comics with V For Vendetta – creating an icon of disruption in the process.
David is currently attending Salon Internacional del Comic de Granada, organised by Asociación Cultural E veleta Cómic and Asociación Juvenil Hasta los Juegos, alongside fellow comic creators such as Howard Chaykin, Jaime Martin and many more, promoting Aces Weekly there. The event includes an exhibition dedicated to the Spanish creators of horror comics of the 1970s, including originals by José María Bea, Luis Bermejo, Adolfo Buyla, Luis García, José González and José Ortiz, all owned by Jaume Vaquer, one of the largest private collectors in Europe.
The cover of the Big Issue ties in with the issue’s main feature, “Ten years since Occupy”. As we were about to enter the age of austerity, the Occupy movement became a manifestation of the anger felt at the time. Many of the issues protestors spoke about are still with is so this week the magazine asks whether protest can actually achieve change?
Plus, meet “The Lord of St Paul’s”, the curious and remarkable story of Big Issue vendor Jimmy who during the Occupy protests became the owner of St Paul’s Cathedral. Sort of.
Also inside, among many other things, the bard of Barking, Billy Bragg, talks about choosing to become a hunter rather than the hunted in a “Letter To My Younger Self”; Ridley Road writer Sarah Solemani explains how the anti-fascist shoe has its root in the housing crisis; Imagine Dragons’ Dan Reynolds reveals the tunes that fire him up; the team find out why the spending review will be critical for the future of Housing First; and, marking World Homeless Day earlier this week, the magazine takes a trip to meet street paper vendors from Australia, Taiwan and Serbia.
