TV YEARS, a brand-new magazine about old telly is on sale now in all good newsagents – and includes articles by a host of great writers, including Doctor Who Magazine contributors Graham Kibble-White and Andrew Pixley. Published by Bauer Media, the first issue is a fun read, all about the nostalgia decade du-jour, The Eighties.
Weighing in at 100 pages, but costing just £3.99, it comes from the makers of TV Choice magazine and features interviews with John Nettles on Bergerac (“One critic described me as ‘half-man, half-nutmeg, all sex god’”), Lee MacDonald on Grange Hill (“We used to bang on The Young Ones’ dressing room door – they’d chase us around Television Centre”), controversial head of BBC1 Michael Grade on running the channel (“I rewrote the BBC1 autumn schedule by my pool in LA, without having seen any of the shows”), Steve Nallon on Spitting Image (“In 1987, Labour asked me if I’d do a political broadcast for them”) and Sarah Greene on her time in children’s TV (“… At which point Chris Bellinger said into my earpiece, ‘That’s enough!’”).
There’s also articles from Doctor Who writer Mark Gatiss on the controversial drama Threads, Richard Osman schedules his perfect evening of Eighties TV, Samira Ahmed reflects on what she watched during the decade, and Paul Coia discusses the launch of Channel 4. We also get the “The Story of Only Fools and Horses“; “Glen A Larson; Year-By-Year Guide to the Decade”; “TV-am”; Howards’ Way; Edge of Darkness… and a look at the The Gold Blend couple!
And it’s all written by Richard Atkinson, Steve Berry, Ian Jones, Graham Kibble-White, Jack Kibble-White, Richard Marson, Alistair McGown, Phil Norman, Jon Peake, Jill Phythian, Andrew Pixley and Julia Raeside.
“With nostalgia for the Eighties lasting longer than the actual decade itself, we thought the time was right for a magazine to take a trip back to the time when telly ruled – despite only having four channels to choose from,’ says Editor-in-Chief Jon Peake. “We chart television’s journey throughout a decade that gave us classics we still remember fondly, the things we’d forgotten all about and even maybe things we never knew existed – even the ads.
“We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed making it.”
TV Years: The Eighties marks the first of a series of specials from the TV Choice team, with the next planned for publication in November.
