2000AD Prog 2424 and Judge Dredd Megazine 478 hit the stands this week, on sale Wednesday 19th March, with “Nu Earth War Tales” joining the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic lineup. Plus the the Megazine includes a special comic prequel to Rebellion’s latest computer game, Atomfall.
The publisher’s much-trailed Spring Assault is almost here, as this week we hit the penultimate parts of “Judge Dredd: The Shift” in 2000AD 2424, trailed by another brilliant creepy cover from Nick Percival; and “Full Tilt Boogie” – which takes centre stage with a double-length Thriller!
They’re joined by first of a new occasional series you’ll see in the Prog this year, “Nu Earth War Tales”, which explore Rogue Trooper‘s war from some unexpected perspectives.
Atomfall game gets a comic prequel
Then: change is coming to Judge Dredd Megazine, as issue 478, featuring a distinctively quirky but intriguing cover from Anthony Williams, sees the finale of “Fargo & McBane”, “Riley’s Rebels” and “Devlin Waugh”, while “Lawless” heads for a short hiatus. While those four stories are departing for now, we have a new arrival in the form of “Atomfall”, an exclusive comic prequel to the acclaimed new game from Rebellion.
For those unfamiliar, launching 27th March, Atomfall is a survival action game, coming day one to Game Pass. It will also be available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Windows PC and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.

Set in the aftermath of a nuclear disaster, Atomfall tasks players with solving the mystery of what happened at the Windscale nuclear power station. To solve this, you will need to navigate military encampments, delve through abandoned bunkers below ground, and risk your life in Pagan ruins. Central to the dark mystery are the host of eccentric characters and cryptic organisations that inhabit the quarantine zone. These individuals have been cut off from the outside world for years and left to their own devices, so are anything but normal.
But be careful, they aren’t all friendly and you will need to get to grips with an array of ranged and melee weapons if you are to survive…

But where are those 2000AD games?
As you’d expect, the inclusion of an admittedly marvellous-looking Atomfall prequel has, inevitably, led 2000AD fans to wonder why Rebellion has launched an all-new game, instead of drawing on its massive comics assets, including 2000AD characters, for new games. Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley recently addressed that issue in a wide ranging interview with PC Gamer, revealing “half-a-dozen 2000AD games were in the works before fizzling out”. Can you hear screaming from the ranks?

Despite opening the 2000AD universe out to potential licensing ten years ago, there’s not been much to show for it. It’s a situation clearly preying on Jason’s mind, too.
“The option is still open to people,” Kingsley told PC Gamer. “We had five or six people start things, put demos together, try and get funding for them. But then COVID happened, and I guess they sort of all fizzled a bit.”
The question proved an opportunity for the CEO to get a little philosophical about how the gaming industry itself works. “Some got some way, you know, we saw demos and went, ‘yeah, that looks great. You know, go for it with our support,'” says Kingsley.
“But you know as well as I do: lots of games get started and a relatively small fraction actually get finished. It’s quite… it’s quite tragic actually the industry. The games you get to see are a tiny representative of the number that get started. Sadly.”
