Prepare to be chilled and thrilled: Korero Press to publish “Art of Jayme Cortez” books

British publisher Korero Press will release Macabras – The Art of Jayme Cortez and Terror – The Art of Jayme Cortez on 16th November, two books by Fabio Moraes compiling the astonishing horror comic cover artworks of Brazil’s great master, Jayme Cortez.

Jayme Cortez (8th September 1926 – 5th July 1987) is one of the most celebrated Brazilian comic artists, although he was born in Lisbon, Portugal. He began his career as a designer at the age of 15, working on Pim-Pam-Pum (a supplement of the newspaper, O Século), then also worked on the weekly newspaper, O Mosquito, in 1944, drawing comic strips. In 1947, he migrated to São Paulo in Brazil and started creating cartoons, comic strips and illustrations for several newspapers.

During the 1950s, Cortez enjoyed tremendous success in Brazil, thanks to his work in the magazine O Terror Negro (“The Black Terror”), published by La Selva; however, he also illustrated western, science fiction, crime and adventure magazines.

In 1951, with Miguel Penteado, Cortez organised one of the world’s first international comics exhibitions; and, in 1959, he became partner, art director and principal cover artist for Outubro, which published numerous successful magazines.
