The Lakes International Comic Art Festival Podcast team chat to comic creator Rob Davis in their latest episode, creator of the abstract adventure trilogy that began with the British Comic-Award-winning The Motherless Oven, continued with The Can Opener’s Daughter and is completed by The Book of Forks, which launches at the 2019 Lakes International Comic Art Festival next month.
Rob began self-publishing his own comic, the highly experimental SLANG, in 1989. From there, he made the leap from experimental into traditional when he was employed by Fleetway to reinvent British comics icon, Roy of the Rovers.
After drawing “Judge Dredd” for 2000AD, he began working as an illustrator and cartoonist for newspapers, including The Guardian, and children’s book publishers, including Scholastic. In the last few years, Rob has returned to comics, writing and drawing, among other things, Doctor Who for Panini UK. Alongside the stunning The Motherless Oven saga, his work includes the Eisner-nominated The Complete Don Quixote.
Rob looks at his career and explains to podcast co-hosts Nikki Bates and Ian Loxam just why he took a break from comics before coming back to create graphic novels.
Ian and Nicole also preview of The Book of Forks, and also review Essex County by Jeff Lemire. They also spend a huge portion of the show going through the Lakes brand new Festival 2019 guide, which is available now online here, and as a downloadable PDF, and Tom Stewart reviews Stutter by Joe Stone. Joe , a comic creator who also runs the Hackney Comics and Zine Fair, which takes place this coming Sunday, 8th September.
