Tripwire Magazine has announced a new Bristol Comic Con for Autumn 2022, coinciding with the title’s 30th anniversary – and has announced its first guests, who include artist and writer Howard Chaykin, artist Jorge Fornes, Valiant editor Lysa Hawkins, 2000AD artist Jock, artist Sean Phillips, and more.
Bringing together tech, comics and movies, Tripwire Presents Bristol Comic Con will be a family-driven weekend running across the weekend of 3rd – 4th September 2022, with activities and events designed to entertain everyone.
The show’s remit is to provide a total fan and collector experience with panels, exhibitions, dealers, cosplayers and a new addition to the mix – exclusive workshops featuring top international comic names, with decades of expertise.
Tripwire is a long-running magazine of genre culture, examining comics, film, music and so much more, with an online presence, and which has made a recent return to print through crowdfunding, the current issue seeking support now on Indiegogo. Created by Joel Meadows as an incidental fanzine back in 1922, it’s evolved into a comprehensive window into the things people love and consume.
The team behind the new event, spearheaded by Joel, are also looking to make the event a hub for social gatherings where fans and industry leaders can mingle, and they fully intend to make the convention a regular fixture in the comics events calendar.
The first wave of announced guests are, in alphabetical order: artist Elena Casagrande, Eisner Award winner for Marvel’s current Black Widow series); 2000AD and Hellboy artist Laurence Campbell; Howard Chaykin (legendary creator of American Flagg!, The Shadow, Hey Kids, Comics and Divided States of Hysteria); comic artist Gary Erskine, whose recent projects include EM Press’ First Men On Mars; Jorge Fornes (artist on DC’s acclaimed Rorschach book, Batman, and Wolverine, attending his first UK Comic Con since 2018); Lysa Hawkins (senior editor at Valiant, previously editor at DC and Marvel); Jock (artist for 2000AD, Batman, Detective Comics, Shawn Of The Dead and artist behind the scenes on the 2012 Judge Dredd film); Captain America and Deathlok artist Mike Perkins; leading comics artist and illustrator Sean Phillips (Marvel Zombies, Criminal, Reckless and DVD cover artist for Criterion); Doctor Who and Star Wars writer Cavan Scott; comic artist Martin Simmonds, co-creator of Image Comics hit series The Department of Truth with James Tynion IV; Brian Stelfreeze (currently art director for 12-Gauge Comics, artist on DC’s Wednesday Comics, Marvel’s 2016 Black Panther); and 2000AD writer Rob Williams.
“We are very proud of our line-up for our debut comic con under the Tripwire banner and are very excited to welcome visitors to it next year,” says Tripwire Editor in Chief, Joel Meadows, who was instrumental in developing the hugely-successful Portsmouth Comic Con, and has been working on developing the new Bristol event during the Pandemic.
“This Comic Con will be a great opportunity for local businesses to spotlight their work and attract new audiences,” he adds.
