These are my ‘finalists’ in the downthetubes Twelfth Doctor Art Challenge, after a lot of umming and ahhing confronted by such an amazing range of entries, including terrific ‘cartoon’ interpretations as well as the realistic.
When you have a competition that attracted art from the likes of long etablished Doctor Who artists such as Dan McDaid, Kev Hopgood and Lee Sullivan as well as wonderful entries from the likes of Jamie Roberts, Rob Davis, Neil McClements and many, many more, I’m sure you’ll understand coming to a decision as to the overall winner was no easy task.
My short list was honed down on the basis of likeness, Who history homage and inventiveness on the part of the artist. It was interesting how many artists noted the potential links between Peter Capaldi’s Doctor and the First, played by William Hartnell, by the way.
Above, in order, are the entries from Lucas Bowers, Rob Moran, Tony Luke, Smuzz, Brian Gorman and Rachael Stott, and after a lot more umming and ahhing, and going back to look at all the entries again (twice), I have decided to declare Australian designer and illustrator Lucas Bowers the overall winner of the competition, and heartily applaud all the other entrants for their work.
Lucas wins a copy of the amazing graphic novel 3 Seconds by Marc-Antoine Mathieu, from Jonathan Cape (reviewed here, encompassing three seconds of time) and some Doctor Who goodies from our TARDIS-like collection of comics-related stuff.
Thank you to everyone who entered. What challenge should we do next?
