The Awesome Comics Podcast, Bigging up Indie Comics

Prompted by a newly-released book, Legends of Indie Comics: Words Only featuring work by a staggering range of indie comic creators, this week’s Awesome Comics Podcast – Episode 511 – sees the gang discuss what comics you should rediscover, or discover for the first time, joined by Alan Henderson, creator of The Penned Guins.

For those who came in late – where have you been? – the Awesome Comics Podcast is the place where the best in the small press comics scene make one hell of a big noise. Here, hosts Dan Butcher (Vanguard), Tony Esmond (Never Iron Anything) and Vince Hunt (The Red Mask from Mars), spotlight the best and brightest in the world of small press and independent comic books. You’ll find out about books you’ve never heard of but you will love.

There’s great informative interviews with creators, full of helpful tips for any aspiring comic book creator just starting out. Theres also a ridiculous amount of humour running throughout. (Be warned, some swearing!)

Dalgoda Omnibus by Jan Strnad and Dennis Fujitake (About Comics, 2025)

On Episode 511 – These Indie Comics Should Have Been Bigger!: there are some indie comics and characters that have become huge global successes, moved into legend and, let’s face it, everyone knows about. But what about those books and characters that have gone under the radar and should have been as big?

Well, Alan Henderson (The Penned Guins) joins the ACP gang to discuss what comics you should rediscover, or discover for the first time, prompted by the recent release of the crowdfunded book, Legends of Indie Comics – Words Only, in which favourite heroes of 1980s indie comics and beyond rise again in brand-new prose tales by original creators.

The ACP team won’t let them fade into time – and neither should you! But which indies deserve more attention? (Over on his Substack, Tony Esmond has some suggestions, including the recently-collected Dalgoda by Jan Strnad and Dennis Fujitake)

Also, there is chat about creativity, conventions, great events to check out going forward and of course… lots of COMICS!!
