An auction of Marvel, DC & Independent Comic Books from Excalibur Auctions on Saturday (9th August 2025) incudes a number of vintage British comic lots, including original art.
Included in the largely American comic book-focused auction are bound copies of early issues of British comics, plus art by Jack Kirby, Denis Gifford and Frank Godwin.

Comic Cuts (Nos 53 – 78, cover dated 16th May – 7th November 1891) Bound Volume. Initially aimed at the growing number of literate working class adults who couldn’t afford a penny newspaper, Comic Cuts held the record for the most issues of a British weekly comic until overtaken by The Dandy in 1999.


The Jester and Wonder Nos 86 to 111 (cover dated 4th July – 26th December 1903) Bound Volume starring “The Bunsey Boys & Mr.Toogood”, including the Christmas 1903 double number with colour cover


The Jester and Wonder Nos 218 – 243 & 244-269 Bound Volumes (cover dated 6th January – 29th December 1906). Complete year in two bound volumes, starring “Bob the Pet Navvy & The Bunsey Boys”. The July to December volume has a file copy sticker on the front cover. The file copy appears to include a list of creators who have worked on material for the issues included

The Jester and Wonder Nos 426 – 451 & 452 – 478 (cover dated 1st January – 31st December 1910). Complete year in two bound volumes starring “Constable Cuddlecook”. Both volumes appear to be file copies although the sticker has fallen off the cover of the second volume
Sunbeam Nos 648 to 674 (cover dated 2nd July – 31st December 1938) – Half-Year bound volume starring “Molly & Mick and “Dick and Doris Detectives”
The Hotspur Nos. 305 to 331 (cover dated 1st July – 30th December 1939) – Half-Year Bound Volume

Superman Annuals for 1951 and 1952 published by Atlas Publishing. The first annual is hard to find. It’s titled ‘Superman Bumper Edition’, with the cover art taken from Superman #53

Copies of Eagle from Volume 13, 14 and 15, published by Hulton Press/ IPC Magazines between 1962 and 1964. A collection of issues running from the issue cover dated 10 February 1962 to 26th December 1964. Includes the Free Gift ‘Marvels of this Modern Age’ Album and four cards that came with Volume 13 No. 10

A full set of Joe 90 Top Secret comic (Nos 1 – 34). Original owner copies, with striking cover art which also contain the first original British “Star Trek” comic strips. No free gifts

TV21 & Joe 90 Nos 1 to 105 complete 105 issue run, kept in nice condition

Warrior No. 1 (1982 by Quality). First issue of the comics anthology that includes the debut of the “V for Vendetta” stories, the first appearance of Axel Pressbutton and the first appearance of Marvelman since 1963.

Plenty of early issues of Marvel and DC Comics will command attention and bidding here, but there are some fine items of note, too, including…
Batman #1 (1940 – DC, Slideshow above). Featuring the first appearances of the Joker and the Cat (aka Catwoman) and Hugo Strange appearance. Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson classic cover and art. Bill Finger story. The comic is complete with no missing pages, but it’s not in great condition –there are no staples and the cover is detached. The cover is also poor, with a large piece missing which has been crudely replaced and has a piece missing from the bottom left hand corner and various colour touches, tear seals etc.

Daredevil #1 – (1964 – MARVEL – UK “Pence Copy”). First appearance of Daredevil (blind attorney Matt Murdock). Plus first appearances of Karen Page and Foggy Nelson. Jack Kirby and Bill Everett cover with Everett interior art

I Dream of Jeannie #1, published in 1966 by Dell. The first of a two-issue series based on the television series

Showcase #22 (1959 – DC) featuring the first appearance and origin of Hal Jordan and the first appearances of Carol Ferris and Abin Sur – plus the first mention of the Green Lantern Corps

Original “His Highness The Duke of Broadway” art by Joe Simon for the “Topsy Turvy Tavern” story from Black Cat Comics #7 published in 1947 by Harvey. Measures 51cm x 38.5cm

Original Comic Sunday Strip Art for the newspaper strip “Rusty Riley” by Frank Godwin, dated 23rd March 1958 – distributed by King Features Syndicate. Long-running series held in high regard by comics strip afficionados for the exceptional quality of art and writing that Godwin brought to it. Measures approximately 60cm x 41cm overall. In very good condition, the title stat is missing from the first panel, and there are a few instances of type loss.
