Brand-new Commando, Issues 5883 – 5886, are on sale from DC Thomson this Thursday, 28 August 2025, in all good TG Jones on the high street and other outlets, and digitally via Magzter and other platforms.
There’s a great selection of old and new on offer, with “Bismarck: The Last Days”, a superb naval war story by Iain McLaughlin, with striking: art from Manuel Benet, leading the set. Set aboard the doomed German World War Two warship, this is a downbeat but pertinent tale, with media attention currently focused on the end of that particular conflict.
While British war comics have long departed from telling only the stories of World War Allied combatants, those focused on German soldiers are still in the minority. Giving a human face to a once caricatured foe provides a welcome take of a war story. The Commando team seem determined to address this of late. “The Last Prussian”, the other new story in this set, by Robbie MacNiven with dramatic art by Esteve Polls, is also focused on German forces, this adventure set in Germany at the end of the war, pitting regular soldiers against the worst of the Nazis who have brought death and chaos to the country.
When this extends to the forced exile of villagers close to a threatened, strategically important castle, one veteran leader decides to make a dangerous stand. Powerful stuff, and a decision not without cost… Neil Roberts provides a standout cover, too!
Complementing the new are two tales from the title’s now extensive archive. “The 8.15 to Glory”, focused on three rogues who are the worst of the worst, and “The Chase is On”, offering a weird Commando team up yarn by CG Walker.
You wouldn’t expect a hardened British soldier to team up with a botanist and an enemy Japanese officer all in aid of capturing a bandit gang led by an AWOL Brit — would you?! Well, that’s exactly what happens in Issue 5886, fronted by a stunning cover from another Commando legend, Jeff Bevan. It’s an unlikely tale, certainly, but a smashing mix of humour and adventure nonetheless.
Plus, who expected to find killer bees in a Commando story? I certainly didn’t!
Commando 5883 (Home of Heroes): Bismarck: The Last Days
Story: Iain McLaughlin | Art and Cover: Manuel Benet

The battleship Bismarck was the pride of the Kriegsmarine during the Second World War. A mighty warship preying remorselessly on the Allied convoys that ferried supplies between the US and Britain. She was unsinkable — or so her crew thought.
Matrose Jurgen Voss was certainly convinced of the great ship’s infallibility. Some of his more seasoned crewmates, childhood friend Peter and cousin, Helmut, knew better than to believe themselves invulnerable, but none of them were to know the true danger they were soon to face – that these were the last days of the Bismarck.

Commando 5884 (Gold): The 8.15 to Glory
Story: Gentry | Art: Franch | Cover: Penalva
First published 1971 as No. 578

This is the story of three troublemakers who had more charges against their names than a whole regiment. Yet when the chips were down, they did as much fighting as a whole regiment.
Gentry’s three rogues are the worst of the worst, so how is it this becomes an epic tale of heroism? You’ll have to read to find out!
Commando 5885 (For Action and Adventure): The Last Prussian
Story: Robbie MacNiven | Art: Esteve Polls | Cover: Neil Roberts

The proud son of a long line of Prussian warriors, Oberst Max Von Riedesel has military service in his blood. He believes he has seen the worst of war, but the Second World War has shown him another side of his beloved Germany.
Riedesel does not approve of the Fuhrer’s Reich — his duty is to his people. His countrymen in the SS, though, will make any sacrifice for their misguided ideals. Before long, Riedesel will face a terrible choice — where exactly do his loyalties lie?

Commando 5886 (Silver): The Chase is On
Story: CG Walker | Art: Ibanez | Cover: Jeff Bevan
First published 1984 as No. 1802

The Malayan jungle wasn’t called “Hell’s Hothouse” for nothing. And with hidden dangers everywhere, the search for a ruthless killer and a bandit gang was too hard for one man alone.
But help was at hand from unexpected quarters – a Japanese officer and a British private who knew far more about flowers than he did about fighting!
