In Review: Panel Borders: Crowd-Funded Comics

 Panel Borders: Crowd Funded Comics

A train journey to the Lakes afforded me the chance to listen to this terrific episode of the Resonance FM ’Panel Borders‘ podcast about the positives and negatives of crowd funding your comic projects.

This show concluded a month of shows looking at cartoonists who launch their projects using crowd-funding websites.

Alex Fitch talked to comic book creators Emma Vieceli, Paul Duffield, Anastasia Catris and Mike Garley in a panel on the subject recorded at True Believers Comic Festival, Cheltenham back in February.

Emma discusses using Patreon to fund her webcomic Breaks, Paul talks about collecting shorter works that were unlikely to find a republisher, while Anastasia and Mike explore the advantages and disadvantages of using Kickstarter to pay for unusual themed anthologies.

It’s a fascinating discussion – covering simple things like budgeting for postage as well as the production of your comic, but also the more general aspects of crowd funding and patreon backing for comic creators work.

Well worth a listen. Everyone involved offers very useful advice on how to plan your Kickstarter – how to encourage people to pledge more to assure success, and how Patreon is changing the relationship between reader and creator.
