DC Thomson Bags Rights to “Twirlywoos”

Twirlywoos

DC Thomson has signed a deal with DHX Brands to publish a Twirlywoos next year, based on the hit CBeebies preschool show devised and produced by Ragdoll ProductionsAnne Wood, whose creator credits also include Rosie and Jim and Teletubbies, with lead creative and writer Steve Roberts and producer Chris Wood.

The Twirlywoos are four small, bird-like characters who are inquisitive, enthusiastic and always looking to learn something new about the world.

Ever curious, they seek adventure and fun wherever they go.  Whether in the real world or on their Big Red Boat, they love to hide, imitate and be surprised as they discover new things.  The show has been developed with a commitment to watching how children interact and develop, and each episode creates spaces for pre-schoolers to make their own connections, which aids their learning.

Twirlywoos combines stop-frame animation and live action sequences set in the real world and is produced in association with DHX Media, which also handles global distribution, merchandising, brand management and marketing.

“We are delighted to be working with DHX Brands to publish such a creative, delightful new magazine,” says Maria Welch, Head of Children’s Publishing at DC Thomson, “Our editorial team are considering every element to enhance pre-school development, be visually stimulating but most importantly to make our pre-schoolers laugh out loud.”

The magazine is based on the key values of the show – silly, fun and full of surprises – and each issue will be themed around an episode and these episodes are based on Professor Cathy Nutbrown, educational consultant on Twirlywoos, schemas, patterns of play that children repeat as they grow and develop. There’s more about the thinking behind the show in this video from Ragdoll.

A high quality covermount gift linked to the theme and content in the magazine will be given away with each issue, says DC Thomson.

“We are delighted to team up with DC Thomson on the launch of the official Twirlywoos magazine,” says Tom Roe, Commercial Director at DHX Brands.  “The team at DC Thomson brings with-it great passion and enthusiasm and has truly understood the brand’s unique DNA.

“The magazine will allow our fans to fully immerse themselves into the fun world of Twirlywoos beyond the screen.”

Twirlywoos magazine will launch in 2016. For more about the TV show visit www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/shows/twirlywoos
