B7 Media’s “Martian Chronicles” wins International Radio Award

B7 Media - The Martian Chronicles

B7 Media’s dramatisation of Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles for BBC Radio 4, has won Silver in the prestigious 2015 New York Festivals International Radio Program Awards, in the Best Drama Special category.

The Awards, honouring the World’s Best Radio Programmes, were announced at the annual gala held at Manhattan Penthouse in New York City last month and the award is, hopefully good news for SF fans wanting to hear more of the genre on the BBC radio station.

Directed by Andrew Mark Sewell and featuring Derek Jacobi and Hayley Atwell, B7’s The Martian Chronicles was one of the high points in BBC Radio 4’s 2014 science fiction drama season, Dangerous Visions. Screenwriters Richard Kurti and Bev Doyle wrote the adaptation, which is a terrific version of one of Bradbury’s best-loved tales.

B7 Media tell us The Martian Chronicles will be released on CD and for download later this year.

“I couldn’t be more delighted that our dramatisation of The Martian Chronicles has received this international accolade. It’s not only a tribute to our exceptional cast and crew, but also reflects the strength of independent radio drama production in the UK,” says audio producer/director, Andrew Mark Sewell.

B7’s Patrick Chapman, who initially had the idea of adapting the anthology for Radio 4, produced The Martian Chronicles.

“Since I first read Bradbury as a child, I have been captivated by his unique vision of Mars. Bradbury’s Mars is a beautiful, dangerous planet of the imagination, and his book is a true American classic,”he says. “We were delighted to have the opportunity to dramatise these stories for radio in a bold new version, updating for a modern audience whilst staying true to the spirit of Bradbury.”

“We’re delighted that once again the creativity, professionalism and quality of the UK indie audio-led sector, has been recognised at these awards,” commented Will Jackson, Chair of UK industry body the Radio Independents Group, “against excellent competition from companies around the world.”

B7 Media is an independent production company working across radio, theatre, television and film. Its reputation for creating dramatic, widescreen audio worlds that sound lived-in, real and cinematic, has also been demonstrated to epic effect in its recent BBC Radio 4 adaptation Sumia Sukkar’s The Boy from Aleppo Who Painted the War. B7 is also known for the epic audio reboot of cult TV classic Blake’s 7, featuring Derek Riddell, Colin Salmon and Daniela Nardini (for BBC Radio 4 Extra).
