Lakes International Comic Art Festival 24×7 Anthology

The list of nominees for this year’s Eisner Awards has been announced and includes a number of British creators – and a nomination for the anthology 24 By 7, edited by Dan Berry and published by Fanfare, featuring strips created during the Lakes International Comic Art Festival‘s 24 Hour Comics Marathon in 2014.

“Hand Me Down,” by Kristyna Baczynski, published in 24 By 7, has also been nominated for the Best Short Story Award, Tillie Walden has earned a nomination for I Love This Part published by Avery Hill (reviewed here), and there’s also a nomination for Giant Days by John Allison, Lissa Treiman, and Max Sarin, published by BOOM! Studios/BOOM! Box.

Also nominated are Sydney Padua, writer/artist of The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage and British comic creators Mark Millar, Sean Phillips, Simon Spurrier and Sean Michael Wilson.

Published by Fanfare Presents and edited by Dan Berry, the 24 By 7 project and the 24 Hour Marathon the strips were created in was initiated and funded by the Lakes International Comic Art Festival, which returns in October.

During its 2014 event, comic creators  Sarah McIntyre, Joe DecieKristyna BaczynskiFumio ObataJack TeagleWarwick Johnson-Cadwell and curator and editor Dan Berry worked around the clock on coffee and smiles to produce “a spread of seven comics as diverse as they are witty as they are beautiful to behold”. The final work features a wonderful range of strips (reviewed here) featuring all manner of subjects, from witches to scribbles, paperclips to salty tales, hand-me-downs to chance encounters and doomed love, all drawn in 24 hours.

Fanfare and Lancaster-based book publisher and distributor Gazelle part sponsored the event at the show, which was subsequently collected and presented in a beautiful hardcover anthology, complete with a 16-page gallery of photos by Katie White of the day.

“The Lakes International Comic Art Festival in only their second year had the inspired idea to host a 24 Hour Comic Marathon,” recalls 24 By 7 publisher Stephen Robson of the project’s origins. “Having grown up on the borders of that beautiful National Park I was inspired enough to sponsor the event.

“Now I have seen some pretty dire outcomes from such happenings over my (many) years in comics so was not expecting anything spectacular but – they cheated, thank goodness! One of the artists, Dan Berry, acted as curator and producer of the event and even brought the groceries!

“So, on 16th October 2014, seven artists entered a room together to each draw a 24-page comic story. By the evening of the following day the stories were all drawn and boxes of the comics were being picked up from the printers, and it was all done on coffee and smiles.

“I had been unable to attend the show and had never met any of the artists so, when I received a set of the individual comics a week or so later, I was so taken with the quality I immediately phoned Festival Director Julie Tait and asked if I could publish them in an anthology for her. Since they did not fit into the Ponent Mon mould, I even started up a new publishing company for the anthology, Fanfare Presents.

“Once more, Dan stepped up to the plate and acted as editor and designer for the anthology.

So my many thanks to distributors Gazelle and all the sponsors for helping this to happen, thanks and congratulations to all the artists for their ‘lost day of talent’, their kind consent and their involvement in the project, an extra hug for Kristyna for her own story’s nomination, endless thanks to Dan for his selfless and tireless help throughout and a special thank-you to Julie Tait, Director of LICAF for the idea, opportunity and incredible support, and whose book this truly is.”

The fact that we had such fun doing it, and that it turned out to something to be really proud of, just shows you what you can achieve with a bit of motivation and unlimited caffeine supplies.”

“The production of 24 By 7 has been one amazing experience and only happens very rarely,” says Fumio Obata. “I was the very last one to finish and put pressure on Dan Berry but was so happy working alongside all the great talents in such a great venue. Now an Eisner nomination comes along. It is a great recognition of the pool of talent we have in the UK.”

“I can’t believe It’s been nominated, it’s absolutely fantastic,” says Jack Teagle. “It’s great to see so much concentrated work in such a short amount of time come together and go on to create this amazing book. I’m incredibly grateful that I got the chance to contribute.”

The 24 Hour Comic Marathon is being rested for this year’s Festival, while the team think of new ways to present it, but Julie Tait tells us shes’s hopeful interest in the 24 By 7 collection of the 2014 strips will prompt a similar assembly of the 24 Hour Marathon strips created in 2015.

The Eisners: Votes For Women!

The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, which are decided by the votes of comic professionals worldwide, are presented under the auspices of Comic-Con International, a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to creating awareness of and appreciation for comics and related popular artforms, primarily through the presentation of conventions and events that celebrate the historic and ongoing contributions of comics to art and culture.

Overall, this year’s nominees reflect the wide range of material being published in comics and graphic novel form today, with over 160 titles from some 60 publishers and by creators from all over the world. Among nominated works, four titles lead the list with three full nominations each: Monkeybrain’s BandetteTop Shelf’s March: Book TwoEd Piskor’s Hip-Hop Family Tree, and the archival Argentinian comic strip collection The Eternaut (the last two published by Fantagraphics).

Bandette, the online series by Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover, is nominated for Best Continuing Series, Best Digital/Webcomic, and Best Painter for Coover. March: Book Two, by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell, has received nods for Best Reality-Based Work, Best Publication for Teens, and Best Penciller/Inker (Powell). Hip-Hop Family Tree, Book 3 is nominated for Best Reality-Based Work, and Piskor is up for Best Writer/Artist and Best Cover Artist. The Eternaut, by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano Lòpez, is competing for Best Archival Collection–Comic Strips, Best US Edition of International Material, and Best Publication Design.

49 women have received a record 61 nominations (compared to 44 last year) and are represented in 27 of the 30 categories for this year’s Awards. In fact, women make up the majority of nominees in seven categories: Best New Series, Best Publication for Early Readers, Best Publication for Kids, Best Adaptation from Another Medium, Best Graphic Album–Reprint, Best Coloring, and Best Academic/Scholarly Work.

Those women with the most nominations are artists Colleen Coover (Bandette) and Joëlle Jones (Lady KillerBrides of Helheim) with three each. An additional four women have two nominations each: Erica Henderson (penciller/inker, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Jughead), Lucy Knisley (writer/artist, Displacement: A Travelogue), Marjorie Liu (writer, Monstress), and Sydney Padua (writer/artist, The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage).

• 24 x 7 is being sold by the book’s individual creators at comics events across the UK

• 24 Hour Comic Day, which inspired this project, happens every year and will take place in 2015 from 12 noon on Saturday 4th October and 12 noon on Sunday 5th October. Creators of all ages will be given the opportunity to create a 24 page comic.
