Panini has set 23rd November 2023 as the launch date for the collected edition of its “Liberation of the Daleks” comic strip, the prequel to the Doctor Who anniversary specials that’s been running in Doctor Who Magazine all year.
Picking up from where the previous Doctor Who TV series left off, Liberation of the Daleks, written by Alan Barnes with art by Lee Sullivan, is the Fourteenth Doctor’s first official adventure. A new regeneration, but a familiar face, this exclusive comic strip collection, sees the return of the Doctor’s deadliest enemies – the Daleks!
Taken from the pages of Doctor Who Magazine, this 14-part tale bridges the gap between recent episodes, tying directly into the new TV series continuity.

Alan Barnes is the author of Sherlock Holmes on Screen, and has co-written (with Marcus Hearn) volumes on the James Bond films and Quentin Tarantino. A former editor of both Doctor Who Magazine and the Judge Dredd Megazine, his fiction writing includes over forty full-cast audio dramas for Big Finish Productions, plus the script for CBBC’s animated Doctor Who adventure, The Infinite Quest. He was part of the dialogue team for Risen 2: Dark Waters, nominated for Best Videogame Script in the 2012 Writers’ Guild Awards.
Lee Sullivan – who will be making an appearance at London Comic Con (11th – 12th November) has been a comic-book artist since 1987, working on Transformers, Doctor Who Magazine (semi-regularly, becoming well-known for his drawings of the Daleks), RoboCop and William Shatner’s Tek World for Marvel US; “Judge Dredd” and “Mercy Heights” in 2000AD; the Radio Times “Doctor Who” strip; The Amulet of Samarkand graphic novel; five years on Thunderbirds Magazine; five years on Fabbri’s Doctor Who: Battles in Time comic strips and three years of DVD Files illustrations, as well as various Who covers for Titan, and contributed to the programme’s 50th Anniversary celebrations, in the form of posters and a comic strip for the Royal Mail’s Prestige Stamp Book and IDW’s Prisoners of Time.
His work has also appeared on the show itself, in the Series Eight episode “Time Heist”. He has also supplied box artworks for the Big Chief Studios Gerry Anderson 1/6 scale figures.
From 2015-18 he produced six graphic novels for the ongoing Titan comic book series Rivers of London – a continuation of Ben Aaronovitch’s successful series of novels featuring Peter Grant, scripted by Ben and Andrew Cartmel.
Since 2018, Lee has been working as a concept artist in the TV industry and has also produced two album covers for his sax-playing hero, Roxy Music’s Andy Mackay; a series of English-as-a-foreign-language graphic novels for Penguin; and, in addition to drawing Liberation of the Daleks, wrote and drew a new comic strip for the now sold out Fireball XL5 Anthology.
