  1. Sorry to be pedantic but I always thought it was Mechanoids (with an A) rather than Mechonoids (with an O)… Don’t tell me I’ve had this wrong for the last 59 years!

    • There are variant spellings of the Daleks robot foes – in the article above, we have used the title per the comic strip being published, “Dr. Who and the Mechonoids”, but “Mechanoids” is used elsewhere.

Mechonoids (sometimes spelled “Mechanoids”) first appeared in the Doctor Who television series in episodes 5 and 6 of the 1965 serial “The Chase”. They were conceived by writer Terry Nation, designed by Raymond Cusick, and built by Shawcraft Engineering.

An attempt to recapture the success of Dalekmania, they battled Skaro’s mutants, and faced them again in the pages of the TV Century 21 “The Daleks” comic strip. This led to some surprisingly strong opinions as to the spelling of their name – ‘Mechonoids’ in the production paperwork for “The Chase”, but ‘Mechanoids’ in the comic.

However, most recently, they were identified as “Mechanoids” in the Doctor Who animated Time Lord Victorious DALEKS! series, in Episode Three, “Planet of the Mechanoids“.

So you’re right, and we’re right. How’s that for continuity chaos?

      • Presumably the joke with that spelling is that it’s slightly off brand because set in the Peter Cushing/Milton Subotsky universe of Who.
