This week’s 2000AD, Prog 2422, featuring a “Hawk the Slayer” cover by Cliff Robinson and Dylan Teague, is out on Wednesday, available in all good newsagents, comic shops, and as a digital download. This issue sees the finale of the “Hawk” tale, with more adventures expected in future.
Comic creator and archivist Lew Stringer notes it’s the only survivor of the traditional weekly adventure comics of the 20th Century, still using the 32 page format that became the norm for most comics in the late 1960s / early 1970s.
“The traditional fictional editor ‘Tharg’ inside though dates back to an even older tradition over 100 years ago,” he points out, after the comic celebrated its creation 48 years ago, “to the days of the early comics such as Illustrated Chips and characters like Philpott Bottles the Offis Boy’s weekly message.”
Tharg survives thanks to reader support, reinvention. And remarkable storytelling – so here’s what to expect this week…

John is the founder of downthetubes, launched in 1998. He is a comics and magazine editor, writer, and Press Officer for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He also runs Crucible Comic Press.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine and Overkill for Marvel UK, Babylon 5 Magazine, Star Trek Magazine, and its successor, Star Trek Explorer, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics; and has edited several comic collections and graphic novels, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”, and Hancock: The Lad Himself, by Stephen Walsh and Keith Page.
