In Review: A Corner of Some Foreign Field (a free web comic)

This short, eight page strip, available to read online for free, is ideally suited to those long cold, and slightly spooky, winters nights. It’s partly inspired by the true story of the murder in February of 1945 of one Charles Walton, a crime that since is strongly suspected to have been part of a blood sacrifice in a witchcraft ceremony and remains unsolved to this day.

To fully describe the story would undoubtedly lead into spoiler country but for me, it manages to combine the feeling of UK weekly comics of the 1970s and 1980s along with a real Wicker Man/ Hammer Films sensibility. It is eerie and supplies all the sharp jolts of a movie like The Kill List.

The art is crisp and clear from Alfie Gallagher and the colours from Chris O’Halloran are vibrant and eye-catching. The story, in my humble opinion, takes a couple of leaps that might confuse the reader and this affected the flow of the narrative for me, but the ending is well crafted in its final panel.

Perhaps a longer story over more pages/panels would have explained the moments that I found difficult to follow? Moments seemed abstract and out of context, and in German…
