This week’s Catawiki International Original Comic Art Comics Auction includes a number of pages by British artists, or work by international artists for British titles, alongside some terrific manga work and more.
Curated by Louis Girard, himself an avid collector of special editions with over ten years experience, on offer this week is an early page of “The Steel Claw” by Jesús Blasco, first published in Valiant in November 1964; a page of “The Spider” from Lion by Reg Bunn in pen and ink, published, based on information on the back of the art, in Lion and Thunder in the 1970s; a “Jeff Hawke” strip from the story “The Poltergeist” by Sydney Jordan; a page from the Trigan Empire story “The Imposter”, published in 1971, by Don Lawrence, a story also known as “The Unscrupulous Servant”; and a page from the Robot Archie story “Return of the Sludge”, first featured in Lion in 1970, with art by Ted Kearon.
Also in the auction is a fun drawing of Asterix’s pal Obelix in Scottish costume, together with his canine pal, Dogmatix, by Marcel Uderzo, brother of Albert Uderzo, whose role in the Asterix stories of is often overlooked; an original drawing of Conan the Barbarian, created by Spanish master Sanjulian as a tribute to John Buscema; a gorgeous cover by José González for the cover of an edition of The Beautiful Is Vanished by Taylor Caldwell, published by Fontana Press in 1973; and an equally stunning western book cover by Fernando Fernández, commissioned by Selecciones Ilustradas for the European and American Market in the 1970s.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
