Nesbits Auctioneers November auction includes Dan Dare art, Muhammed Ali “Champion Boxer” puppet, Betty Boop figurines, and even a full-size reindeer sled!

In among the lots of a general antiques, jewellery and collectables next week from Southsea-based auction house Nesbits Auctioneers are three lots of interest to Dan Dare fans – one featuring original art, and more. But there’s more to savour, too, including toys, World Cup memorabilia, and a full-size reindeer sled!

Comic art fans will most certainly be interested in a lot that includes a Treen artwork, signed by the late Greta Tomlinson, one of the original Eagle comic art team, rough sketches and inks / watercolours by Martin Baines, and a page from the Eagle “Dan Dare” story “Project Pluto”, first published in Eagle 1958 Volume 9 No. 28.

Also on offer is a large quantity of Dan Dare and Eagle hard back annuals from the 1960s and beyond, including Eagle Annuals 1-10, through to modern reprints of the classic comics, Dan Dare Pilot of the Future pop-up book; and a large quantity of Eagle comics from the 1950s / 1960s.

Beyond Dan Dare, alongside watches, jewellery, fine art, Masonic regalia and even a full-size reindeer sled, you may also want to check out a charming lot of Betty Boop figures; a boxed tinplate Space Capsule offering “non stop mystery action”, produced by Japanese SH Horikawa in the 1960s; a box of beaten up die cast Corgi and Dinky vehicles that includes the Green Hornet car and a much-played with Maximum Security Vehicle from Captain Scarlet; and a boxed Muhammed Ali “Greatest Champion Boxer” hand puppet, together with some boxed Britains “Eyes Right” figures, Marx ‘Sir Cedric Black Knight’, with armour and accessories, boxed and a boxed battery operated Moon Ranger Mercury Mark IV.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Star Trek Explorer (previously known as Star Trek Magazine) and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War and “Dan Dare”. He’s the writer of "Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies" for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
