Strange Daze! This week’s 2000AD, Billy’s Boots returns – and a 2020 book schedule reminder

2000AD Prog 2165 - CoverOn sale now in all good newsagents and comic shops is 2000AD Prog 2165, with a “Proteus Vex”, from D’Israeli that continues inside, written by Michael Carroll with art by Henry Flint. Plus, in all good bookshops from today – the first collection of the classic football strip Billy’s Boots, from the Treasury of British Comics.

In this week’s 2000AD Nerve Centre, Tharg pays tribute to the late Ellie de Ville, who died on Christmas Eve, and has announced a full tribute will appear in next month’s Judge Dredd Megazine. She’ll be much missed, as Jenny Wackett noted in her tribute for downthetubes.

Strip-wise, there’s a nod to the Id Monster of Forbidden Planet fame in the continuing Judge Dredd story “Kill Bloopy” by Kenneth Niemand, with great art from Dan Cornwell, and some great all-out action from Dan Abnett and Richard Elson in “Feral & Foe”.

I’d also just like to note the fantastic colour work on “The Zaucer of Zilk” written by Peter Hogan this issue from Len O’Grady and series artist Brendan McCarthy, which for me, is absolutely gorgeous.

The 2000AD colourists – and there are plenty these days – don’t regularly get any credit, so a tip of the hat to them all here!

On the letters page, in happier mood, Tharg rounds off the Prog noting that there’s been much “political upheaval amongst you humes in the last few months, but let me just say as we head into a new year and a new decade – if there’s one thing you can count on in these uncertain times, it’s the always-scrotnig 2000AD!”

Thank goodness for that!

Billy's Boots - Final Cover

Also out this week is the long-awaited first Billy’s Boots collection from the Treasury of British Comics, a brand-new restoration of one of the most popular football comic strips ever produced!

Young Billy Dane was one of the most passionate football fans at Bingley Road Junior school… unfortunately he was also one of the worst players! Then, one afternoon, Billy’s grandmother got him to clean out her attic and Billy finds a pair of old fashioned football boots that belonged to ‘Dead-Shot’ Keen – a famous centre forward who once played for England…

Written by Fred Baker, with art in this first collection from Mike Western and others, the Treasury team worked hard on restoring the pages of this collection, this is a fun strip that some of you may remember was reprinted for a while in Pete Nash’s first edition of Striker comic – until then  Egmont, who then owned “Billy’s Boots”, balked at the strip running alongside the more adult football strip from The Sun and unceremoniously pulled the plug.

For fans of the strip who started re-reading the story, you’ve had a long wait to find out how it continued!

It was the decade in which footballers became real superstars a time when Melchester goalkeeper Charlie Carter had to choose between staying at the club or perusing a burgeoning career as a pop singer. And it was a period when Roy Race truly cemented himself as the heart, soul and brain of the club by taking on the role of player manager.

The secluded rural village of Harrowvale holds a dark past — that years earlier, on a farm bordering the vast tracts of woodland, it hosted a cult that was seeking to escape civilisation and find purity in the old ways, namely worshipping an ancient deity called THISTLEBONE. Led by the charismatic Jasper Hillman, their pagan beliefs grew ever more radical to the point where they held the young Avril Eason captive with the intention of sacrificing her. But Avril escaped…

Ken Reid, Various Writers
ISBN: 9781781087794

UK £19.99
Pages: 144 // Hardcover

Between 1970 and 1974, Ken Reid drew a weekly humour strip for Scorcher and Score, and this collection collects the first two years of those strips, featuring the strips “Sub”, “Manager Matt”, “Hugh Fowler” and “Football Forum”.

Irmantas Povilaika, who has long documented the life and work of Ken Reid and published the wonderful two-book collection The Power Pack of Ken Reid (still available here, and well worth buying!), notes Ken was not a sports fan, and only agreed to draw the strips because he was desperate for work after the demise of Odhams comics. Of the strips featured, he wrote “Sub”, the other strips the work of unknown Fleetway script writers who ably found the funny side of the game.

This is the first collection of the never before collected strips from Scorcher and Score. Let’s hope a collection of the other football-focused strips he drew – “The Soccernauts”, “Harry Hammertoe”, “Jimmy Jinks” and “Triptoe Triers” will follow.

If you want to know more about Ken’s work for Scorcher and Score, then an extensive two-part feature on all of Ken’s football strips featured in two issues of ComicScene last year. You can buy a digital collection of every issue of ComicScene published in 2019 here on GetMyComics.

Irmantas has also featured the strips on his own Kazoop blog.
