There’s good news for fans of the Starlord and 2000AD character Strontium Dog, with the addition of issues of the long-running zine Dogbreath to The Fanscene Project archive curated by David Hathaway-Price.
First published in 1997, Dogbreath was a zine dedicated to all things related to the strip “Strontium Dog”, created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra for the short lived Starlord, and subsequently featured in 2000AD.
Spanning over 30 issues and one “side project”, Dogbreath features a wealth of fiction and features, including comic strips, with many covers and pinups by 2000AD artists such as Rufus Dayglo and the late Nigel Dobbyn.
The zines, presented in read only format, are included in the burgeoning Fanscene Project archive with the kind permission of the original publishers, and by the hard work of Keith Gainham, who has, so far, scanned early issues of the zines, and prepared the PDFs.
So far, Kevin has scanned only half of the run, with more to come in due course.
Their inclusion is also thanks to Michael Molcher at Rebellion, who own the Strontium Dog character, who gave permission for the zines to be included in the Project, and who also suggested that the archive would be a suitable host for them.
Dogbreath was first published by Dr Bob (Amanda Kear) for the first fourteen issues published between 1997 and 2006, with FutureQuake Press, run by Dave Evans, Richmond Clements and Owen Watts publishing issues 15 – 38 between 2006 and 2020.
The Fanscene Project celebrates over 50 years of British comic fanzines and fandom. The aim of the site, which now features digital archives of over 100 zines, including BEM, Comic Media News, Fantasy Advertiser and Speakeasy, is to create a digital repository of as many of the Comics Fanzines published in the UK as possible.
These fan publications contained work by artists and writers who would sometimes later move into, and shape, the industry that they loved.
Equally, they contain work by people who simply appreciated the sense of community offered by taking part in fandom, and who may now look back fondly on a hobby no longer followed.
It’s also home to digital editions of the brilliant zine FANSCENE, edited and published by David Hathaway-Price, which charted the entire history of British cmics fandom.
