The Art of The Avengers and Other Heroes - The Avengers

In the early 1960s, the Avengers, along with the Fantastic Four, were created as Marvel’s response to rival DC Comics superhero revival. Unlike the Fantastic Four, the Avengers distinguished itself by its rotating list of heroes. Nearly every character in the Marvel Universe, from Spider-Man to the Hulk, have cycled through its roster at one time or another since its earliest beginnings.

Significant pieces of artwork will be exhibited publicly for the first time, including original comic book pages featuring a stunning selection of the art of Spider-Man – who tried to join the Avengers several times, The Hulk, Black Panther, Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man, and many more.

The exhibition will be assembled from the collection of notable collectors, and is organised and curated by comic art collector and historian Rob Pistella (curator of The Art of Spider-Man exhibition held at the Society in 2017).

At over 200 pieces of original art, this exhibition will be the largest selection of vintage and modern original Marvel art that has ever been displayed in the world.

An opening reception to the public will be held on Thursday 12th July at 7.30pm | More details here

Founded in 1901, the Society of Illustrators is the oldest nonprofit organisation dedicated to the art of illustration in America. Notable Society members have been N.C. Wyeth, Rube Goldberg, and Norman Rockwell, among many others. Its mission is to promote the art of illustration, to appreciate its history and evolving nature through exhibitions, lectures and education, and to contribute the service of its members to the welfare of the community at large.

Their Museum of Illustration was established in 1981, offering year-round themed exhibits, art education programs and annual juried competitions. The Permanent Collection houses 2,500 pieces that are catalogued for scholarly use and displayed periodically. In 2012, the Society created the MoCCA Gallery with a focus on curated exhibits of comic and cartoon art.
