Doomlord Volume 1: Zyn is on sale now from Hibernia Comics, bringing fans a collection of the original photo strips from the relaunched Eagle, launched in a blaze of publicity in 1982.
Written by John Wagner and Alan Grant with photography by Gary Compton, “Doomlord” appeared in the very first issue of what’s often called “New Eagle” by fans, and rapidly came to rival the revived “Dan Dare” in popularity.
Doomlord Volume 1: Zyn – available to order here, and you’d better be quick, because these collections sell out fast – is a collection featuring the first Doomlord photostrip – the very first time this cult classic has been reprinted in English.
Behind the fantastic cover designed by Hibernia’s Richard Pearce, who has done an absolutely incredible job, as usual, restoring the comic pages, relive the story of Doomlord Zyn’s terrible mission, and journalist Howard Harveys struggle to stop it.

Doomlord is told in Fumetti style or photostory format, with photos replacing traditional comic art, a format rarely used in British boys comics, but one that proved perfect to tell Doomlord’s tale. The 64-page perfect bound collection includes an introduction by Eagle Editor David Hunt and a special feature, “An Alien Life in Pictures”, exploring Doomlord’s origins – the costume, and the actors who portrayed the characters.

Doomlord Memories!
Recalling the revival of Eagle, the late Barrie Tomlinson, the title’s Group Editor, once wrote “The re-launch, in 1982… was an exciting time! The only two things we kept from the original title were ‘Dan Dare (Pilot of the Future!)’and the centre-pages cutaway drawing. It was the television era and we decided to tell some of the stories in photographs, rather than drawn artwork. Photo-stories were very popular in girls’ comics. But it was a massive task for us to create photo-stories for boys. We had to show wars, battles and all sorts of boys’ adventures in photographs! In the end, I thought it worked very well. Remember, we had no computers to help us!
“I can remember one occasion when David Hunt and myself went on location for a Doomlord photo-shoot, at night. We went to a park just outside London. The photographer, David, myself and Doomlord. If anyone had stumbled across us, the Doomlord outfit would have scared them to death.
“As it was, it was us who were scared, because there were deer strolling around the park, bellowing. It was the rutting season and we didn’t fancy coming face to face with a giant, randy stag. So we got the job done quickly and made a fast exit!”
