We Apologise for Our Hiatus

Our apologies for yesterday’s site outage, which is now, hopefully, resolved; the unexpected hiatus hopefully remedied, for now, although more under the bonnet tinkering may be required.

Running a long-running website like downthetubes – we’ve been publishing this site in different forms since 1998! – still sometimes forces you on unexpected learning curves involving acronyms, dealing with hidden legacy detritus and coding demands you never expected you’d be having to do when you start your day. I hope our issues didn’t spoil your experience of our site too much!

One of the casualties of the changes is that our newsletter will now feature on our Crucible Comic Press Substack. We have not exported any addresses from our previous newsletter to Substack, so you’ll have to subscribe there for updates.

Automatic shares to our social media – Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram, Threads and Tumblr – are unaffected by the change.

Thank you for your continued support.

Mickey Bach (1909 – 1994) was producing Word-A-Day cartoons offered through various syndicates to American newspapers, from the 1940s to about 1985, for the pleasure of people who wanted to improve their vocabulary skills. You can enjoy seeing hundreds of his images by visiting the Word A Day Revisited Index.

Although AmazonUK lists details of the 1965 Word-A-Day Index, you’re more likely to find a copy on eBay for a reasonable price
