Here’s some items we’ve picked out, including art created for some memorable UK published Marvel annuals and a terrific unpublished Micronauts piece by US artist Arthur Adams…
Cover art for the Marvel Annual 1975 published by World Distributors in the UK. Adapted from style guide art, fans have generally identified this as a Herb Trimpe, inked by Frank Giacoia, but there is no paperwork to confirm this. Artist David Roach suggests a Ron Wilson/Frank Giacoia pairing.
Arthur Adams Micronauts Unpublished Pin-Up Original Art (Marvel, 1983). A piece that pre-dates his first published comics work, this is a simply stop-you-in-your-tracks show-piece, stuffed full of detail and an obvious love for the subject matter! This pin-up features the looming figure of Baron Karza above the main Micronauts players of Acroyear, Bug, Huntarr, Marionette, Fireflyte, and Arcturus Rann (not to mention a slew of Karza’s guards).
Dave Gibbons Watchmen Movie Reference Illustration Original Art (DC/Warner Brothers, 2009). Original Watchmen related art by Dave Gibbons is hard enough to find, but a fantastic grouping of headshots of the six main characters is a real corker of a find! Featuring Rorschach, the Comedian, Ozymandias, Silk Spectre, Dr. Manhattan, and Nite Owl.
Dave McKean – Sandman Unpublished Painting Original Art (undated). Sandman… Lord Morpheus… Dream of the Endless. This immortal being was the star of Neil Gaiman’s smash-hit Sandman. Dave McKean’s covers were influential in setting the tone of the book and making it clear that this isn’t a cape-and-cowl superhero book… it was a fairy tale for adults.
Charlie Adlard The Walking Dead #82 Story Page 7 Original Art (Image, 2011). The gang goes on a zombie slugfest
Alan Davis and Mark Farmer Green Lantern: Emerald Twilight/New Dawn Cover Original Art (DC, 2003). It’s the dawning of a new world, in this symbolic cover, as Kyle Rayner is bestowed the last power ring and becomes the new Green Lantern, and with Hal Jordan becoming the new Spectre who would seek redemption for his sins as Parallax.
Avengers Annual 1975 Cover Original Art (Marvel UK, 1975). Most of these annulas at the time were adapted from style guide art by a variety of artists. David Roach suggests the art is by Ron Wilson, inked by Frank Giacoia. The annual itself reprinted Avengers #110-112
The splash page from Spider-Man Comics Weekly #149 published by Marvel UK in 1975, issue cover dated 20th December 1975. J. Jonah Jameson’s Spider-Slayer robot is hot on the heels of Spidey as part of the title’s ongoing reprinting of Amazing Spider-Man #105.
