The Comic Book Postal Auctions, aka Compal, 2026 May/June catalogue is open for bidding, and there are plenty of treats on offer for collectors, with original artwork and a rare first issue of The Beano attracting plenty of bids – the latter currently at £7000 and counting.

It’s no surprise that issue of The Beano is much sought after – for its age, published back in 1938, it still has bright cover colours and clean pages, although there is an uneven three inch vertical tear to the back cover. If you’re a Beano or The Dandy fan, then there’s a good selection of rare wartime comics in this auction, too, as well as a high grade run of Magic-Beano annuals and Dandy Monster Comics.
Don’t miss out, either, on a copy of British publisher L. Miller’s scarce Black Knight No.1 from the 1950s, either, or the mouth-watering science-fiction selection including Electroman, Masterman, Space Ace, Space Comics, Captain Valiant and Spaceman Comic of the Future, illustrated by Ron Embleton and Norman Light.

Commando comic fans will delighted to see early 1960s issues on offer – and this auction offers a near complete run of Commando 1-150 and 300-450, plus comics such as The Topper through 1963-64 and a phenomenal run of the Alan Class title, Creepy Worlds nos. 32-38, reprinting Marvel’s Fantastic Four #1-6 and #8 – all CBCS encased and graded (For info, Fantastic Four #7 was not reprinted by Alan Class).

The 1970s include a group of bound volumes from the IPC Editorial Archive starting with the controversial Action comic (most issues from No 1 cover dated 14th February (With Free Gift) through to the issue cover dated 25th December 1976, plus several girls comics titles – June, Music Star, Princess Tina, Sally, Sandie and Rock On!, all in relatively high grades. There are also complete/near complete years of Romeo, Tammy, Tracy and Valentine.

“Whiplash” original artwork (1984) by Ron Turner. This artwork was the forerunner of Turner’s 64 page World War Two illustrated story about a renegade Aussie patrol on Australia’s Northern Territory sabotaging the insurgent Japanese army patrols from occupied New Guinea
The US section boasts a scary selection of Golden Age Horror comics, including Adventures into Terror, Adventures into Weird Worlds, Black Terror, Chilling Tales, Ghostly Weird Adventures, Weird Terror and Witchcraft. Other Golden Age titles include Amazing Detective, Batman, and more.

Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine and Overkill for Marvel UK, Babylon 5 Magazine, Star Trek Magazine, and its successor, Star Trek Explorer, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics; and has edited several comic collections and graphic novels, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”, and Hancock: The Lad Himself, by Stephen Walsh and Keith Page.
He’s the writer of comics such as Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs”, with Dave Hailwood.
