Ewbank’s, Surrey’s leading auction house, has three auctions of interest next week running consecutively from Wednesday 28th – Friday 30th October, offering Toys and Models that include Doctor Who and other items; Entertainment Memorabilia and Movie Props; and an auction of rare movie posters and poster art that includes 2001: A Space Odyssey, James Bond, Star Wars items and more.

The Toys and Models auction includes some Character Group, Corgi and Product Enterprise Daleks and other Doctor Who items. These are offered in a catalogue that also includes rare Bayko sets, plus Airfix kits and railway models.

The Entertainment Memorabilia and Movie Props auction includes a rare Pink Floyd poster, advertising their gig on March 5 1967 at the Saville Theatre in London, and a full set of autographs from The Beatles. The Pink Floyd poster has a pre-sale guide price between £4,000 and £6,000.

The vendor, who was a member of Lee Dorsey’s back group The Scots of St James, got this poster in person at the gig, at which Pink Floyd were the support band. The team at Ewbank’s is expecting high interest in this collectible piece of musical history.

A black and white photograph featuring a full set of original autographs from The Beatles has been valued between £3000 and £5000, and other pieces of rock memorabilia offered include a gold disc marking more than one million dollars’ worth of sale for Black Sabbath’s Sabbath Bloody Sabbath album, framed and glazed and valued between £700 and £1000. For Queen fans, a rare blue and white holdall, which was only given to the band and immediate personal crew members by US promoters in February 1977, has a guide price of between £500 and £800.

Other lots of note in this auction include a number of comic artworks or art created by comic artist, including a Watch with Mother – Bill and Ben book illustrated by the late Phil Gascoine, published by Purnell in 1961, along with art boards from the project; and an earlier The Woodentops – Washing Day book and art, published in 1960. There’s no frontispiece to images for this lot, but from the style, this also looks to have been painted by Phil.

Also offered alongside lots of US comics and vintage badges, including a 1975 edition of Marvel’s Werewolf By Night, which features the first appearance of Moon Knight, are cartoons by Carl Giles (of Daily Express fame) and Michael Heath; a page from the Doctor Who Magazine comics strip “The Stockbridge Child“, with art by Mike Collins; and art for 1980s British Marvel Comics VHS releases across three lots, with some parts mixed into other offers, including “Spider-Man – The Terrible Triumph of Doctor Octopus” and “Spider-Woman“; and what looks to be at least part of an “The Avengers” release. (These lots offer an intriguing look back at how physical art was mrked up for colour, used across the print industry, pre-digital).

This auction includes an original painted cels for an animated Batman And Robin production, signed Doctor Who star photographs, props from both TV and film productions, including Doctor Who, Flash Gordon, Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter franchise.

The lots in the catalogue complete with a Star Wars – Life size kit built C3PO. On base, with vacuum formed plastic sections that slot together, it has been wired so the head lights up. Measuring 170 cm high, the kit was shown to Gordon Tarpley a leading C3PO builder and in the United States, who believes it’s from a company called Golden Armour.

Rounding off the week of auctions come a sale of film posters that includes 2001: A Space Odyssey, James Bond, Star Wars items and more, including a rare British Quad poster advertising 1962 James Bond film Dr No, starring Sean Connery, which has a guide price of between £3000 and £5000.

A poster for 1982 film Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, using its original title Revenge of the Jedi, has been valued between £400 and £600. This is an original dated poster released in advance of the US release of the film.

Also included is a rare 1985 Brazil British Quad film poster, featuring a ‘withdrawn’ design after a fall out between director Terry Gilliam and the distributor over film length.

A poster for 1966 film Thunderbirds Are Go has an estimate of between £300 and £500, and there are a small number of film artworks, too, by artists that include Vic Fair and frequent Look-In cover artist Arnaldo Putzu.

Don’t forget that, as previously reported, Ewbank’s will also be staging a unique auction of huge hidden archive of models, props, scenery and scripts linked to Thunderbirds genius Gerry Anderson on 30th November 2020.

Featuring production puppets, models of aircraft, sets, Gerry’s personally annotated scripts and even storyboards for a series of Thunderbirds that was never filmed, this dedicated auction expected to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Much of the consignment is linked to the 1980s Terrahawks series, but items from Captain Scarlet and Thunderbirds also feature.
