Judge Dredd Megazine gives 2000AD designers Robin Smith and Steve Cook a mind probe!

Here’s our guide to Rebellion titles releasing this week on the 19th February, including 2000AD Prog 2420 and Judge Dredd Megazine 477.

After recently fighting a frog and his ghost friends, Constanta’s journey as “Fiends of the Western Front” continues in 2000AD this week, as Arizona proves to be home to demonic angels, undead monsters, and some terrific moustaches. Elsewhere, “Hawk The Slayer” enters into a deadly tournament as he attempts to get closer to Morgaine, while Judge Dredd meets some new monsters as he tries to navigate “The Shift”…

Then, Judge Dredd Megazine continues the Thrills as a new Judge Dredd thriller finds the Lawman of the Future facing off against a Messianic figure up to no good.

Plus, Anna Readman goes absolutely wild on artwork for “Fargo & McBane”; and “Cadet Rico” wraps up its recent run with the young judge hanging perilously above the abyss!

2000AD designers in the spotlight

Also in the Megazine, two designers that played an integral part in the development of the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic in different eras come under the spotlight this issue. First, former 2000AD art editor Robin Smith reveals his role in sketching out the ideas that would become some of the anthology’s most acclaimed and iconic covers as new book Cover Story: The Design Art of Robin Smith collects his numerous design briefs alongside the final versions for a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of the Nerve Centre in the late 1970s/early 1980s.

Cover Story: The 2000AD Design Art of Robin Smith By Karl Stock Paperback – scheduled for Wednesday 12th February 2025 | 176 pages ISBN-13: ‏ 978-1837864355

Meanwhile, at the other end of the Eighties, the prog was to undergo a revamp, and newcomer Steve Cook was tasked with giving the logo and typography an update. He chats with Karl Stock about his amazing career as a designer and photographer, working not just for Tharg but Marvel UK – and Sindy, too!

(Hands up who remembers those photo shoots Steve took Sindy on around London? Sending him to photograph Daleks on location during recording of the Doctor Who story The Curse of Fenric, a commission that would probably have had social media in meltdown today? Oh, just me, then… of course, I was sharing an office with him at the time!)
