ComicScene UK – the new monthly magazine dedicated to comics and comic culture – is to launch a fortnightly podcast on Tuesday 5th February, presented by Phillip Vaughn and produced at the University of Dundee.
The Podcast is an extension of the monthly magazine and complements the magazines news website.
The first edition features ComicScene publisher Tony Foster on the background to publishing the title, an interview with Batman and Judge Dredd artist Cam Kennedy, the ComicScene Book Club featuring Roy of the Rovers and a look at classic and new comics with guests in the studio.
The first edition features also features The British Superhero author and Chris Murray, senior lecturer in comics studies at the University of Dundee and director of the Scottish Centre for Comics Studies. He’s also the author of Champions of the Oppressed and editor of UniVerse Comics, coeditor of Studies in Comics (Intellect), and co-organiser of the International Comics and Graphic Novel conference.
Also featured are Golnar Nabizadeh, Lecturer in Comics Studies at the University of Dundee where she teaches on the MLitt in Comics and Graphic Novels, and Damon Herd, currently working as Coordinator of Dundee Comics Creative Space. He’s an artist and researcher of autobiographical comic books, performance, and “the games authors play with truth”.
“I wanted a podcast that could reflect aspects of the magazine, for it to include a diverse range of voices and opinions and be based in a place where UK comics are produced,” says Tony Foster.
“I heard Phillip’s Masters In Comics Podcast which had the quality we wanted, he had connections with top and upcoming creators and he just happened to be based in Dundee, home of DC Thomson and the Beano, so it was the perfect fit.”
“I chatted with Tony on the phone and we were of like mind on the direction of the ComicScene Podcast,” says Phillip.
“I have the creative freedom to develop the Podcast and there are some exciting things coming up in future editions. The first one is a bumper two hour launch show and we hope it will go from strength to strength and be an unmissable listen every fortnight.”
