The latest ComPal comic auction, spanning British and American comics and comic art includes the opportunity to own Ron Turner‘s original art for Marvel UK‘s rare The Dalek Chronicles collection, published back in 1994, featuring the best-known Doctor Who villains; and a terrific “Judge Dredd” back cover artwork for 2000AD by Ron Smith.
Originally commissioned by Gary Russell, then editor of Doctor Who Magazine and Doctor Who Classic Comics, the superb “The Daleks Chronicles” item is just one of the latest artworks on offer by Ron from the John Lawrence Archive of Ron Turner Comics and Artwork in this auction. All the art was items owned by artist Ron Turner‘s agent and friend, who was one of the finest science fiction artists of his day.

Art in this auction includes a bounty of original “Charley’s War” pages for Battle, drawn by Joe Colquhoun, and a “Judge Dredd” back cover artwork drawn and signed by Ron Smith for 2000AD prog 294, published in 1982.
Also offered is the Teddy Tail’s 1937 Annual cover artwork by Herbert Foxwell and a wonderful Desperate Dan original artwork by Dudley Watkins for The Dandy published in 1947; and “Shipwrecked Circus” original art by Paddy Brennan.

As comic archivist Lew Stringer has recently noted by 1982, Ron Smith, who passed in 2019, had drawn more Judge Dredd strips than any other artist. The art is estimated to sell for £2000. It will be interesting to see the final hammer price.

Desperate Dan original artwork (1947) drawn and signed by Dudley Watkins from The Dandy Apr 12 1947. Dan’s dear little pet becomes Desperate Dan’s Desperate Dragon. Indian ink on cream cartridge paper. 21 x 15 ins (The comic is also illustrated but not included in the lot).
Shipwrecked Circus five original artworks (1957) by Paddy Brennan, three from the Beano Nos 764 and 766 and two earlier strips from the same adventure with Samson rescuing the submarine’s children from dangerous shallows. Indian ink with red wash on cartridge paper. Each 15 x 5 ins
The Spider vs. Sylvester Jenkins original artwork (1967) by Reg Bunn from Lion Sept 16 1967. Villainous scientist, Sylvester Jenkins, nemesis of the Spider, uses his sinister Magnifying Ray on the Zoo’s Lions and Tigers to stage his greatest crime… Indian ink highlighted with white on cartridge paper. 20 x 16 ins
Dan Dare original Phoenix Mission artwork (late 1990s) painted and signed by Don Harley for Spaceship Away No 3 (2003), included in the lot. ‘The old Z-19 spaceship explodes activating the Black Cat’s remote drone-ship fighting machines just as Dan and his crew escape with moments to spare..’ Bright gouache colours on board. 20 x 15 ins
Included are Ron Turner’s re-creation artworks of his key 1950s Science Fiction paperback covers, and, as noted above, a brilliant Daleks action board inspired by his Daleks back cover illustrations for TV Century 21, commissioned for Marvel UK’s collection of “The Daleks” strip, published in 1994.
Space Ace and the Lost City original artwork (1960s) by Ron Turner for Lone Star Magazine, first published by DCMT before they sold to Atlas. Space Ace started with Lone Star No. 3 in 1952 with Turner illustrating him for over 10 years. Black pen and Letraset on cartridge paper. 15 x 11 ins.

Original fanzine artwork from publisher Alan Austin’s estate includes cover art of The Shadow by Bryan Talbot, Spider-Man and Spider Women by John Bolton, with Batman, Captain America and Silver Surfer pieces, too.
Alan Austin (1955-2017) was the first full-time comics dealer in the UK, starting ‘Heroes’ comic shop in an Islington basement in 1979. He produced the first Comic Book Price Guide for Great Britain, published fanzines including Fantasy Unlimited, Comics Unlimited, DC & Marvel Indexes and Golden Age. He was known to his many customers and friends as ‘The Guv’nor’, but he was much more than that – a Titan of British and US comic book fandom.

Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine and Overkill for Marvel UK, Babylon 5 Magazine, Star Trek Magazine, and its successor, Star Trek Explorer, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics; and has edited several comic collections and graphic novels, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”, and Hancock: The Lad Himself, by Stephen Walsh and Keith Page.
He’s the writer of comics such as Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs”, with Dave Hailwood.
