MCM Comic Con back in Brum this weekend

MCM Birmingham Comic Con LogoMCM Birmingham Comic Con returns to the NEC this weekend for another feast of geeky entertainment… and alongside all the exhibitors, comic artists, eSports tournaments and cosplay competitions, the show will be playing host to a great line-up of special guests.

Comic creators and illustrators at the event include John-Paul Bove, Dave Boydell, Alfie Garland, Mike Krome, Alex Lloyd, Alexandra McCarthy, Paul Rose and Elena Vitagliano. Publishers include 3rd Phase Studios, Beyond the Bunker, Fly Comics, Hellbound Media, Orful Comics and Subversive Comics.

Film and TV stars meeting fans at Comic Con include a real sci-fi icon in the shape of Lindsay Wagner (recently at Liverpool MCM), best known as Jaime Sommers in 1970s mega hit The Bionic Woman, but who also guest starred on Warehouse 13; the inimitable Warwick Davis, of Stars Wars and Harry Potter fame, and Tom Mison, who stars as Ichabod Crane in hit supernatural series Sleepy Hollow. And speaking of iconic sci-fi, Red Dwarf’s Robert Llewellyn (Kyrten) and Danny John-Jules (Cat) are taking a break from filming Series XII of the much-loved deep space sitcom to be with us too.

They’ll be joined by Noah Huntley (Snow White and the Huntsman, 28 Days Later), Murdoch Mysteries stars Thomas Craig and Hélène Joy, who play Inspector Brackenreid and pathologist Dr. Julia Ogden in the acclaimed Canadian crime drama, and Primeval‘s Andrew Lee Potts (Stan Lee’s Lucky Man, Wireless) and Hannah Spearritt, currently appearing in Casualty and an original member of S Club 7.

Cast and crew from sci-fi adventure Pandorica also join the line-up, giving attendees a sneak peek at their upcoming film and taking part in an on-stage Q&A. And gamers will want meet our trio of top voice actors – Paul Amos and Victoria Atkin, who co-star as twin assassins Jacob and Evie Frye in Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, and Elias Toufexis, the voice of prehistoric protagonist Takkar in Far Cry Primal and Adam Jensen in the Deus Ex franchise.

Meanwhile, Birmingham Comic Con’s Memorabilia zone will be home to more than 50 guests from the worlds of film and TV, including Shirley Eaton (Goldfinger), Amanda Barrie (Coronation Street), Anthony Higgins (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Danny Webb (Alien 3), Carol Cleveland (Monty Python), Sarah Sutton (Doctor Who), Shane Rimmer (Thunderbirds), Marc Silk (Johnny Bravo) and Catherine Schell (Space: 1999), along with cast from franchises such as Doctor Who, Star Wars, James Bond and Hammer horror.

John Freeman

The founder of downthetubes, John describes himself as is a "freelance comics operative", currently working as a freelance editor for TITAN COMICS, as Creative Consultant on the new DAN DARE audio adventures for B7 Media, and on promotional work for the LAKES INTERNATIONAL COMIC ART FESTIVAL and LANCASTER COMICS DAY. John has worked in British comics publishing for over 30 years, starting out at Marvel UK, where he edited a number of the Genesis 1992 books with Paul Neary. His numerous credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine at Marvel and Star Trek Magazine and Babylon 5 Magazine at Titan Magazines, where he was Managing Editor. He also edited STRIP Magazine and worked as an editor on several audio comics for ROK Comics, including TEAM M.O.B.I.L.E. and THE BEATLES STORY. Most recently he is writing CRUCIBLE as a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz, published on Tapastic; and DEATH DUTY and SKOW DOGS with Dave Hailwood for the digital comic 100% Biodegradable.
