Osprey Publishing and DC Thomson have joined forces to create eight new Commando Comics graphic war novels.
The new books – to be sold globally through the Osprey/Bloomsbury distribution network – will consist of an original, fictional, full colour comic strip of 84 pages coupled with detailed historical information describing the featured conflict campaign and combatants.
The creative teams on the line has yet to be announced.
Osprey, part of Bloomsbury Publishing, is the leading publisher of illustrated military history. Founded in 1968 and with over 40 years of experience, the company has published more than 2,500 titles on a wide range of military history subjects from ancient times to the present day, covering battles, campaigns, uniforms, weapons, equipment, tactics and organization, including books illustrated by talented comics artist and illustrator Gerry Embleton.
The company has a wide range of other interests, including games and modelling, so a partnership with Commando seems to lend itself to a great deal of synergy.
The new fictional action narratives will take place in times of war and feature soldiers, sailors and airmen, exploring themes of courage and friendship against a backdrop of war and adversity. Each strip will be checked for historically accuracy and feature events and situations true to the experiences of the combatants from the actual conflicts across a range of historical periods.
This collaboration brings together the story-telling expertise of Commando and the historical authority of Osprey in a brand new fiction series with supporting material for both adults and children.
‘For many years we have used Osprey’s fiendishly accurate publications as reference material for our artists and writers,” Commando editor Calum Laird told DownTheTubes. “This is a fantastic opportunity to fuse our strengths to create the best comics of war ever. We can’t wait to get started… actually we have already, we couldn’t hold back!”
We understand that while the script writers will be Commando regulars, the plan is to use use non-Commando regulars to give the end product a different feel. And the final product will, of course, be in colour.
“I am very excited to be working with DC Thomson and Commando,” commented Richard Sullivan the Managing Director of Osprey Publishing. “I grew up with their comics and their commitment to telling classic war stories remains undimmed.
“At Osprey we have a hugely enthusiastic customer base and we believe they will love these modern comics telling the stories of battle and conflict.”
“Commando’s stories of action and adventure have been continuously published for over 50 years,” noted Tim Collins, Head of Brands, Commando Comics, “and we’re really pleased to combine our fictional expertise with the factual strength of the Osprey collections and the huge distribution both here and across the world that Osprey and Bloomsbury can deliver.”
