Here’s a list of comics – both US and UK releases – on sale in specialist UK comic shops from tomorrow, Wednesday 30th July 2014, courtesy of First Age Comics, Lancaster. We’ve picked out the titles published by British publishers in bold below, or titles with a British connection we’re aware of.
Releases include 2000AD Issue 1892, which pays tribute to the comic’s first art editor, Jan Shepheard, by reviving the original “Judge Dredd” logo on this week’s strip… prompting at least one 2000AD forum member to suggest it should return permanently. The issue also sees the return of Judge Dredd’s mechanoid servant Walter the Wobot… you have to wonder how on Earth does it survive so many apocalyptic disasters in Mega-City One!
Also out on Wednesday is the 100th Anniversary Special: Guardians of the Galaxy #1 from Marvel, written by Britain’s Andy Lanning and New York-based editor and writer Ron Marz (who also writes Adventures of Superman, out this week from DC) and featuring stunning looking art from Gustavo Duarte. The Special is one of a five-issue weekly “100th Anniversary” mini-series from both acclaimed and up-and-coming creators that give readers a glimpse at the potential Marvel Universe of 2061. The Special is released just as Guardians of the Galaxy hits cinemas here in the UK.
“Andy’s been a huge part of the Guardians of the Galaxy for almost a decade,” noted Marvel Senior Editor Nick Lowe about the project back in April on Comic Book Resources, “so this book would be like he’s come back for a seminal run as a man of — how old is Andy? He’s really old. He’ll probably be 150 in 2061. Andy grabbed industry veteran Ron Marz (whose credits are just too broad to list here). And Gustavo is a relative newcomer who Andy actually brought to the table.”
Artist John Royle is British creator whose work features in this week’s releases, providing both cover and interior art for Danger Girl Mayday Issue 3. After more than a decade of absence, former Danger Girl Natalia Kassle is back in action! But has the world’s deadliest secret agent returned for redemption… or revenge? Comic Book Resources has a preview of the issue here.
Tomorrow also sees the release of the first issue of Sally of the Wasteland from Titan Comics, written by Victor Grishler (X-Men, Angel & Faith, Noir) and artistic up-and-comer Tazzio Bettin. This first issue in a fantastic new series proves Armageddon can be fun! Check out our preview of the first issue here
