The first University of South Wales Cardiff: Comics Symposium whose Key Note will be from Dr Julia Round, author of an upcoming book on girls comic Misty, has re-issued a Call for Papers on the theme of “Creating Comics, Creative Comics”.
The Symposium will take place Friday 1st June 2018 in partnership with the Cardiff Independent Comics Expo and will explore comics and creativity. Papers are invited which examine the practice of creating comics, and the particulars of storytelling in comics.
The event features a Key Note from Dr. Julia Round from Bournemouth University:, who will be speaking on the subject of “Anonymous Authors, Invisible Illustrators, and Collaborative Creation: Misty and British Girls’ Comics”.
Does changing a panel, change the story? How might a medium’s materiality affect its construction and reception? Pudovkin stated that “In order to write a scenario suitable for filming, one must know the methods by which the spectator can be influenced from the screen.” (Pudovkin 1949: 1), and referring to adaption Weaver suggests this is, “the act of translating a story from one medium to another. To do so, you must be cognizant of the needs and storytelling techniques of each medium.” (Weaver 2012: 83).
This symposium addresses these needs from the point of view of the creators involved in the production and creation of comics.
Papers are invited to discuss storytelling through comics; creating comics; Comic form and Comics content; Scriptwriting for comics; Words to Image; Words and Pictures; Analogue and digital forms; Comics and Transmedia; Practice as Research; Teaching through Comics; and Pedagogy and ComicsCreating Comics, Creative Comics.

Julia Round is a Principal Lecturer at Bournemouth University and editor of Studies in Comics journal (Intellect). Her research and teaching interests include gothic, comics and children’s literature. She is co-organiser of the annual International Conference of Graphic Novels and Comics (now in its eighth year), and speaks at numerous international conferences each year and has published a large number of peer-reviewed articles and chapters in multiple languages.
Her books include the monograph Gothic in Comics and Graphic Novels: A Critical Approach (McFarland, 2014), and she’s been working on a critical book on the British girls’ horror comic Misty, which is accompanied by a searchable database of its writers, artists and stories, which can be found at www.juliaround.com/misty.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
