In the 1960s, cartoonist Ralph Steadman created the ‘New Cries of London’ – a series of cartoons published in Private Eye that depict London’s mid-century streets and their traders – the street walkers, the touts, the waiters, the cabbies. He was inspired by Paul Sandby’s and Thomas Rowlandson’s 18th century depictions of street hawkers that reveal the diversity and distinctive identity of the city in this period, as well as its deprivation.
Modern day phenomena, like the privatisation of public space, Uber and the growing reliance – or addiction – to mobile phones, continue to alter our streets, so London’s Cartoon Museum has launched its Life on London Streets competition, to ask you to help them reveal the politics of our London thoroughfares through cartoon representations of the people that work, live and play the streets.
A shortlist of entries from each competition will be used to create a Cartoon Museum digital exhibition and display at the new Cartoon Museum that is due to launch in Spring 2019.
The winner, chosen by a judging panel, will win tickets to the launch of the new Cartoon Museum; annual membership to the new Cartoon Museum; and a Cartoon Creators’ Art Kit worth £100.
• To enter can send your single frame cartoons directly to the Museum by post, at Cartoon Museum, 35 Little Russell Street, London, WC1A 2HH or via Instagram using the hashtag ‘#LNDST’. The deadline for submissions is Friday 28 September 2018. If posting your entry, please mark the back with ‘Life on London Streets’ and your name and contact details.
Please note the Museum will be unable to return any posted entries, so make sure you keep a copy!
