Combining poetry and comics, Poetry Comics by Grant Snider, out next month from Chronicle Books, is a fun and imaginative book, perfect for poetry lovers and reluctant readers, celebrating poetry, and encouraging you to, too…
From the cloud-gazing hours of early spring to the lost bicycles of late autumn, this charmingly illustrated book, the creator of the web comic Incidental Comics hopes to take young readers aged eight to twelve climbing, floating, swimming, and tumbling through all the year’s ups, downs, and in-betweens.
Grant proves that absolutely everything, momentous or minuscule, is worthy of attention, whether snail shells, building blocks, the lamented late bus, or the rare joy of unscuffed shoes.
“These poems explore everything you never thought to write a poem about”, we’re told by the publisher, “and they’re so fun to read you’ll want to write one yourself. Not to worry, there’s a poem for that, too!”
“Poetry Comics is a sprint through a sprinkler, a cool evening breeze, and the discovery of static electricity all at once,” enthuses Eisner Award-winning cartoonist Aron Nels Steinke of the book. “It’s a sensorial experience that taps into what it means to be human and leaves you inspired to explore, discover, create, and connect.”
Perfect for comic fans, poetry fans, offering poems for every season, Chronicle Books hopes this title will prove a valuable addition to school libraries, and encourage creativity in readers of all ages to make and share poetry comics of their own.
With Poetry Month fast approaching in April, the celebration now spreading beyond the United States where it originated, instigated by The Academy of American Poets, this book likes a fun way to mark this year’s festivities.
Grant Snider, who lives in Wichita, Kansas, began drawing and writing before he knew what he was doing. Soon it was too late to stop. His first book, The Shape of Ideas, published in 2017, was a personal exploration of the joys and frustrations of the creative process. He’s followed up with books such as I Will Judge You by Your Bookshelf, and The Art of Living: Reflections on Mindfulness and the Overexamined Life, many of his works now translated into different languages.
His work has appeared in The New York Times Book Review, The New Yorker, The Kansas City Star, The Best American Comics 2013, and across the internet as the popular strip Incidental Comics. Grant works as an orthodontist in his day job. You can often find him carrying a sketchbook, lost in his own thoughts.
