This Sunday will be the last Sunday Night Live Sketch Show for a few weeks from ace 2000AD artist PJ Holden – so don’t miss it!
The Judge Dredd and Stringbags artist offers fans the opportunity to buy a sketch, which he will hopefully have time to draw live during the show.
A Belfast based comic artist, best known for his work on “Judge Dredd” for 2000AD, PJ Holden has built a reputation as a rock solid storyteller able to tell illustrate everything from grim dystopian futures, to over the top comedy adventures through war stories on land, sea and air.
Recent projects include the brilliant graphic novel with Garth Ennis, Stringbags, published by Dead Reckoning and available now. He previously created the controversial digital comic Infurious, was co-creator of “Black Ops Extreme” for STRIP Magazine and Dept of Monsterology with Gordon Rennie, written extensively for imagineFX on using Manga Studio, and draws Folklore Thursday, which is written in tweet form by John Reppion, where he take his 280-character tweet and adapts it into one page comic.
PJ will happily turn his hand to anything, but for his Sketch Show, sketches are A5 which is a great size for a decent sized headshot or bust shot, but would be pretty tiny for a full figure. “I won’t do caricatures,” Paul cautions. “A good likeness takes too long – and I won’t do more than one character in a shot – if you’d like two characters, then you’d need to ask for two sketches.”
Each show lasts an hour. “At least that’s the aim,” says Paul. “It might run over or under, but if I have eight pencil head sketches, I will generally get them all done in one hour with a bit of chatting!”
The online event is also kid friendly. “I was genuinely surprised to find as many kids watching it with parents. When I started the show was at 9.00pm, which proved a little late and we’ve moved it forward to 8.00pm.”
The show will return in August, Paul says, subject to demand.
“My normal limit is about six to nine sketches in about an hour, but if there’s demand I’ll keep drawing til I’m done. Hope you can join me!”
