Digital graphic novel storefront app SEQUENTIAL has released the first four parts of Charley’s War, the classic comic created by industry legends Pat Mills and Joe Colquhoun and first published in Battle Picture Weekly over 30 years ago.
The Charley’s War strips have been collected together by Egmont’s Classic Comics imprint, and tell the story of Charley Bourne, a young solider in World War I. The first part is free to download on SEQUENTIAL for a limited time, with subsequent parts priced at just $2.99/£1.99 each.
Running until the mid-1980s, the series has been described as “the greatest British comic strip ever created” and has been a major influence on many comics writers and artists. Alan Moore, creator of From Hell and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, commented that “None [have come] even close to matching the depiction of inhumanity and misery conjured up by Pat Mills’ and Joe Colquhoun’s masterful Charley’s War“.
Sarah Bates, publishing and marketing director at Egmont Publishing Group, commented: “Charley’s War is one of the biggest names in comics history and we are committed to bringing our e-comics to as many fans as possible. Egmont are delighted to be working with SEQUENTIAL to reach more comics fans; old and new.”
Egmont’s Charley’s War series is divided up into 14 parts. Four are available on SEQUENTIAL now and the next four will be released at the end of November, with the rest to follow by the early 2014 – the centenary of the outbreak of World War I.
Charley’s War joins other classic and vintage comics on SEQUENTIAL, the graphic novel storefront app for iPad, launched by digital publishers Panel Nine in May 2013. They work with the best publishers of graphic novels across the world, including Jonathan Cape, Knockabout, Myriad Editions, and Blank Slate Books, as well as a range of indie and small press publishers.
As we’ve previously reported, Panel Nine make quality graphic novels and comics available digitally via their ‘gold standard’ platform and aim to expand the market for graphic novels for adults with a superhero-free, carefully curated selection of material.
